Renting a scooter

We're doing a "girls-only" trip in May. My sis-in-law is a breast cancer survivor and she's the one who is insisting on the trip (sounds good to me!) I think it's a "bucket list" item for her. Her husband (my oldest brother) doesn't care to go, thus the girls-only trip (my younger brother is pouting, because he wants to go!)

She will need to use a scooter. Is that still $70 a day? It seems like a lot. We'll be there for 3 days. Once we leave for the day, I don't think we'll be back. We'll be staying off-site & I don't know if they'd be able to transport a scooter. For only 3 days, would it be more cost effective to rent from a local company?

This'll be a different trip for me. I'll have to just slow down and be mindful of my companions.

We rented a wheelchair here in Seattle and brought it with us to DLR two years ago. DBF had a torn meniscus and couldn't stand or walk for very long.

I priced out renting from DLR, renting locally in Anaheim and having it delivered, and renting from somewhere near our house so he could use it at the airport and to and from the hotel. Renting at home was the best value.

I'm sure it's different from renting a scooter. I know we went on a holiday tour with a who rented scooters in Anaheim. I wish I remembered their names. They're Disers too!

We went in May. It was $70 per day but you get $20 back upon return. Be careful though because it takes a couple days for the $20 deposit to be put back on your debit card.

We used one for my mother for 4 days in a row, and let me tell you it MADE the trip! It would not have been the same experience without it. IMO, bite the bullet & pay the price. It will be the best spent $150 of your whole trip!

You really need to post this on the disabilities forum -- lotsa helpful advice in the stickies there. Scooters aren't cheap, but renting off site is definitely cheaper, and your sis-in-law can use the scooter in Downtown Disney.

How close to the parks is your hotel? If it's just across the street, your sis-in-law can just drive it to and from the parks.

If you decide to go with a wheel chair, keep in mind that Disneyland isn't as flat as it seems, and pushing it around all day is exhausting.

I went to DL in October with my family and my mom. She has all sorts of issues and needs a scooter (she owns a wheelchair). After searching on DIS for recommendations - Deckert's Surgical kept coming up.

That is who we went with. It was less than $40 a day, no charge for delivery or pick up. We were EXTREMELY pleased.

This place doesn't have a fancy website or customer service center - but they were extremely professional and efficient. We were at the PPH - and there were lots of people we saw there also renting with them. When returning the scooter to the bell folks - they asked who we were with - and after we told them, we could tell it would not be a problem with the pickup.

Oh and mom LOVED the scooter itself. It had a ton more power than the grocery store ones. She has been pricing the model since - its in the $2000 range.

Yep! Deckert's is who my mom used when she was recovering from breast cancer treatments. They were great to work with and a reasonable price. We stayed at HoJo and she motored down the sidewalk while the rest of us walked.

She could walk for shorter distances so she would just park her scooter and walk through the queues, but it sure was nice for her to have the scooter to go from land to land or from DL to DCA. And she was the pack mule. If one of the kids got tired they would ride with Grandma for a few minutes. Or Grandpa would take a turn to ease his knees when she was walking.

My mom also rented from Deckert's and it was a GREAT scooter (ran great and looked very good) and a good price. My mom was a bit worried about the price initially but she found it was WELL worth it.

We were at the Red Lion (close enough to walk for most people, but a bit of a walk nonetheless; it's outside of what some of the maps call "walking distance"). Mom was able to take it to go to the parks and back, and all through the parks, and could have probably done literally 2 or 3 times as much and been just fine. I think once the battery charge went down past full, by 1 bar (so it was 7/8 bars or whatever). Like some others, she took the scooter to a land, then walked around the land, then went on to the next land, etc. We didn't leave anything with the scooter that we would've minded losing, but we didn't have anything stolen.

I probably wouldn't rent in the parks because your sister-in-law would have to walk to the rental area each day, and it's a lot more expensive. There are mixed reviews as to how good the park scooters actually are.

Another vote for Deckerts. Great customer service. I'm notorious for forgetting to reserve. I've been known to call and leave a message on their answering machine, and they will bring out a ECV for me at 8am. I've been renting from them for about 5 years. On one Christmas Eve, I had a scooter that the battery wasn't holding the charge and they offered to come out that evening. (I told them I could deal with it until the day after Christmas!)

Does anyone know Deckert's website? I googled it but wasn't able to find much. I'm wondering if they deliver as car south as San Diego (actually Escondido).
