Hi all! Has anyone rented a house near WDW??

Give me the good, the bad, and the ugly.

I am toying with this idea if I can't get my room for some kind of a discount so.....

Let me know which you have stayed at, if you like it, and how close to Disney it is:goodvibes

We stayed at Windsor Palms in June... about 15 minutes to get to WDW.

After staying in a house...we don't want to go back to hotel rooms. It was so nice to have a private pool, separate sleeping areas, a full kitchen, laundry facilities, etc. We loved it.

I stayed a few years back and decided NEVER to do that again. If I wanted to feel at home, that's where I would stay.

I can see where they may come in handy for some ( large families ) etc. It's just not for me.

I'm going to give you the limited experience we had. We signed up to rent a house, paid the non-refundable fee. Now mind you we went through the listings and settled on a house for several factors and it took awhile to settle on this. Now..a few months out from the trip we get a call saying the house is no longer available. Pulled for whatever reasons. We can pick another home that would be open during that time. (selection was limited) After thinking about it and the realization that this could happen again and again. Wondering if there would even be a rental by the time we got there we aborted the rental house issue. This was the company that is always recommended on allears. I wouldn't recommend. Anyway, we were out the fee too boot. Just be careful.

We've rented pool homes about 4 times. We love having so much space and multiple bedrooms with TVs. I like having a full kitchen, not to cook but being able to have real milk for my coffee. Also my kids can microwave popcorn, have popsicles, etc. w/o having to go to a food court for every little thing.

Keep in mind, you don't get maid service so if clean towels beds made daily matters to you, I'd stick with hotels. For 1 week it doesn't bother me.

I wondered if we would feel like we were in a home or on a vacation too?? Did you all feel like you were still on a vacation?

My search feature never works for me lately :( Does anyone have links to the best sites or best owners to rent from???

I have rented homes near Disney about a dozen times!
We love it! Everything from a 3 bedroom up to a 7 bedroom house with your own private pool.

Most homes we rented were within 15 minutes to Disney.
A lot of the homes are now offering game room and internet connections.
Prices vary depending on location and amenities.

When we stay @ the houses we don't do Disney every day though. It is very relaxing. Still feels very much like a vacation. Cook in, Eat out, It is your choice.

I always rent direct from the home owner as well. Seems more personable.

It sure did. I only feel at home when I'm at home. We only used the kitchen for breakfast and to freeze bottled water to take to the parks. I can't stand having all 4 of us crammed into 1 room with 1 tv and 1 bathroom. Also no privacy for dh and I so no "marital stuff" happening either.;)

I don't mind hotels for short stays like 3-4 days but a full week is just a little too much togetherness.:crowded:

For us that's the only stressful part of cruising.

love renting a home for vacation & yes I feel like I'm on vacation. We love the room and pvt swimming pool . I would not like to go back to a hotel room. I have rented through www.olandovillas.com

I traveled with a large group last summer (there were 9 of us, 4 adults and 5 children) and I rented a 5 bdrm/3 bath private pool home about 15 min from WDW. It was the best decision I ever made. There is no way I would go back to staying in a hotel unless it were just 2 of us.

We had tons of room to spread out, loved having a full kitchen and the private pool was wonderful. I found we saved a lot of money on food as we ended up eating in a lot. We were there in August and it was hot!!! We ate big breakfast in each morning, went to the parks and by 1-2 pm everyone was hot and tired. We came back to the house to swim and found it was just a easy to eat there. We had a grill and kept it simple - hamburgers, hot dogs, steak, chicken, pork chops, etc. with tossed salad, macaroni salad and potatoe salad. Most of the time in the parks the kids just wanted ice cream or slushies, so we really didn't each much in the parks, just snacked.

I also liked having the washer and dryer. I didn't have to bring a ton of stuff with me (we were there for two weeks). I never felt like I wasn't on vacation.

We stayed in windsor palms 5/07 and had a fabulous experience. It was great to save money by doing alot of our own meals and the pool was invaluable for the kids. Having a washer and dryer meant that I had only to bring one suitcase for the twins and me. I'll never stay at a hotel again. I could put them to bed and stay up with the "grown-ups" . We stayed at a 4 br with 3 bath and games room. High on my list was not looking at other peoples pools, so we picked a home with a conservation view and I can't begin to tell you how relaxing it was to watch the wildlife, lizards, turtles, cranes, other birds while sitting in the back watching the kids swim. I'm already planning our next trip back and it won't be til 2011! villa-in-orlando.co.uk.

Staying in a house is the only option for us now. We love it. We find that we can control our budget so much better and that having a home is so much better for the family than a hotel room.

There's no comparison. A small hotel room with two beds and a TV or a full house that's many times bigger, seperate bedrooms for everyone, TV's in every room, games room, our own pool, our own kitchen, our own laundry and all for the same price as a hotel room.

We're due to go back to our favorite Florida Leisure home next month and I can't wait. A 6 bed home with an oversize pool, a wonderful lake view and peace and quiet away from the crowds. It's what we enjoy and I recommend looking at the Florida Leisure web site as they have pictures and videos of all the homes.

I wondered if we would feel like we were in a home or on a vacation too?? Did you all feel like you were still on a vacation?

OH Yes! It felt wonderful to be in a home that wasn't mine. It was quiet! Beautifully decorated, comfortable and I could sleep well! To me, that's the most important part of a vacation! The ability to get a good night's rest in a hotel is a crapshoot most of the time.

Having stayed in a house with our 'own' pool and spa, and space for all the family, we would never choose a hotel again.

I HIGHLY reccommend Florida Leisure. Never had a problem w/ them.
I would NEVER reccommend Loyalty Homes. The homes are gross and misrepresented!

We rented a pool home from LoyaltyUsa.com. Very good people and their homes are fantastic. The ONLY thing that beats their homes are DVC villas. If we were not staying DVC, we would rent from them again in a heartbeat. The house we rented is called Cinderellas Castle. All their homes are on their website. If you call them, tell Yvonne I said hi.

We rented a house for our January trip and loved it. Having all that extra space (even just for two adults) was fantastic.

Just make sure you get the address of the house before you book so you can Mapquest how far it is to the parks. The house we rented was listed as eight minutes to Disney when it was actually closer to 35.

WE love vacation homes! We love having the space to get away from each other if need be. I love my DH and DD to bits but being stuck in a hotel room with them for more than a couple of nights makes me scream! :scared1:

Having your own pool is awesome - no 'opening times' either so you can swim whenever you want. Being able to have breakfast and some evening meals in the House also saves a lot of money and means you don't have to pay 'Disney' prices for things like a cup of coffee or a bowl of cereal. :thumbsup2

As someone else has mentioned you also have the chance for some 'adult alone time' in a villa! I've read threads about parents having to resort to using the bathroom for such things when the kids are asleep. Not my idea of 'romance' personally....more like the sort of seedy behaviour you hear about happening in nightclubs etc!

You can't beat the washing and drying facilities either....we travel from the UK for a 2 week trip and having washing facilities means that we only need to bring a few outfits rather than trying to pack for a 2 week trip with limited luggage allowance from the airlines. :woohoo:

I would not return to a hotel unless it was an adults only trip in the future....but as my DD is only 7 this is a long time in the future! ;)

We've stayed at a private home four times over the last eight years or so. I really have nothing but good things to say.

Actually, the last couple of trips we've combined staying in a house with a few nights at WDW, to get the best of both worlds. For instance, last year we stayed three nights at Wilderness Lodge, then a week in a house.

There is no doubt that you lose a little of the "magic" staying off site. Obviously, you can't just walk down to the dock and catch a boat to the Magic Kingdom...but if you pick the right place to stay, you should be close enough by car to have no more than a 5 minute drive to Disney property. (But, do keep in mind that when you see claims of 5 minute drives to WDW, they generally mean to AKL or the main gate...from there you have another 10 minutes or so to MK or Epcot).

One thing we really liked about having a house was the ability to use a pool or hot tub while the kids nap. This is not something you can do in a hotel. Plus its nice having the kitchen, etc. We really only ate breakfast and occasionally packed a lunch, but its still some savings. I really like the ability for us to spread out rather than climb over each other in a hotel room, especially if the stay is more than a few nights.

If you decide to rent, do check the location. There are places in Kissimmee that can be very close or very far away. Traffic lights on US 192 can kill you if you're in the wrong place. A few good spots are Oak Island Harbor, Formosa Gardens, Windsor Hills.

You can usually save some $$$ if you find a website that lets you book directly with the owners. Look at availability calendars. Obviously, you want to book somewhere that has availability, but look for places that have high occupancy. Beware of places that are "too available". Also, check for costs like security deposits, damage deposits, etc. and check the refund policy if your plans happen to change.

Good luck!
