We are planning to rent a car seat for the rental car. We have a lap baby for the plane. (Yes, I've read how much safer a car seat on plane is....asking a different question)

We are renting thru national rental car. With the emerald aisle service. So, how do you get your car seat? Anyone have experience with this.

Do, you pick out the car, then where do you get the car seat?

TIA

When you rent the car they have the car seats piled up , you just go and pick whichever you want.

manolete are you talking about at the national car rental desk, or out in the parking lot? We have an emerald club card, so I'm hoping we don't have to wait in the car rental line.

I saw dozens of seats piled on each other outside near the aisle.

I'd bring my own after seeing that pile.

They are in the garage, near where you will pick up your car.

we rented a hbb from National. We did find them all stacked in a pile but they were all cleaned and bagged. The had a section of infant seats/bases, convertibles, hbb, and nbb. I can't remember the brands, our booster was a cosco (I think they also had evenflo) the infant buckets were a tan colored base with a tan/cream print cover.

ugh...as a carseat tech it makes me shiver to think of renting a carseat. Those seats are so abused and you have NO IDEA if they've ever been wrecked or not. You hope & pray that if they were wrecked that the rental company actually did destroy it, but you have no idea. :sad1:

Seriously, just bring yours from home. It'll cost you less to buy a travel bag for it, and gate check it (gate checking a carseat is still FREE) than to rent a seat that you know nothing about.

i agree with this. I would think it would be less expensive to bring your own car seat than renting one. Plus, I just think of all of the cooties that may be on the seats.

I would bring your own car seat. It is cleaner, safer and your baby is used to it. Car seats are not usually counted against the luggage allowance. If you are planning to travel frequently while your child is still in a car seat/high backed booster it will be worth your while to invest in a car seat bag. I would also probably bring it the gate and try to gate check it so it's on the top of the luggage pile. I used to attach my DD's car seat to a regular old fashioned collapsible luggage cart to roll it to the gate.

I would bring my car seat... this past trip, my mom took my girls on the ME while I drove to walmart to by them booster seats for later in the day which btw we later left at Disney. No way would I use the car seats they have. While I was walking to get to the mini van aisle, I saw a pile of them fall and I mean like not just one or 2 but more like 8 or 9 of them. They simply pick them up and stack them again. I wonder how many times those things fall and how many accidents they have been in.

Car seats are made to withstand a huge amount of pressure/shock/falls etc. They have to be made that way to stand up during a crash. Falling from a stack will probably not hurt them in the least (unless you are dropping them from some outrageous height). They are cleaned after each use, in fact, people actually have the job description of baby seat cleaners.
They are never used again after an accident. Huge liability issues there.

Now, having said that, I would bring my own and I would use it on the plane.
Seems silly to me NOT to use it on a mode of transport flying through the air at approx. 500 mph and not use it for ground transportation. Not to mention the child is wayyyyy happier and safer in their seat, not wiggly and not apt to disturb other flyers. IMHO, putting the child's safety and comfort, not to mention the comfort of others, behind saving money is absolutely foolish.

They are made that way to withstand a crash... but they're also supposed to be replaced right after it.
I wouldn't trust a rental seat- for that, for accidents or fender benders it's been in, because of how those baby seat cleaners do clean them...
If you are determined to have a lap baby then what about maybe having a scenera shipped to the rental company for you? It'll probably be cheaper than renting anyway and you know it's origins. Can something like that be set up with them?

I doubt that what you mentioned can be set up with them.
As I said, in the event of an accident, the car seat is NOT used again. The baby seat cleaners do a pretty good job of cleaning the seats and after they are cleaned they are put in plastic bags. Baby seats are made to withstand a lot of "punishment", and occasional or accidental drop will not hurt them.

With what do they clean them? Do they clean the harness, or just the shell, and if they clean the harness -- with what?

Carrie, I do not know, I am not in that department, but, I have been told that they clean the entire seat: harness, shell and the seat cover. They scrub it with some sort of disinfectant and a brush.
