renting a car for drive from ny

Flights are crazy expensive for 5 of us.I have a leased pickup, not the best for a 17 hr drive. Has anyone rented for their drive? What are the costs like. How do you make sure you get a reliable vehicle.

We rented a minivan from Avis in 2014. We picked it up in PA, drove it to Alabama, and returned it in PA. Cost was around $1100. We had the car for 11 days. Check the fine print. You'll need unlimited miles, and one of the companies that we checked listed specific states where we could drive the vehicle - Alabama was not one of them. We had no issues at all with the minivan, and ended up driving it more than 2000 miles. Just had to keep filling it with gas.

I've rented at least 10 times to drive from Albany NY to Florida before I forced myself to get on a plane. I never once had a problem and always rented from Budget. I remember one time they stuck me in a SUV with a lot of miles and I just went back inside and explained to them I didn't feel comfortable taking the car that far. As soon as I told him I was driving it to florida, he put me in a nearly brand new SUV.

I would check out the situation with your local car rental agencies first. When I had a car accident, i wanted a rental car afterward and there were none available at any local agency for days. When one finally came in, it was terrible. Broke down on the highway. When my dad needed a rental car, same thing happened to him. None were available for days. One finally came in, but just one. He couldn't have asked for a different one and gotten it at that time. If you live in a bigger city, maybe more cars are coming and going and you will have options.
