I am within my 11 month window and need 12 more points for a booking. I am looking to rent them from Disney when I book this week. However when my 7 month window opens (next month), I may look to add to our reservation. We are considering a transfer, but I am wondering if I will have the option to purchase another 12 points from Disney (for my total of 24) or is that a one-time thing? I have an April use year and I am booking for travel in May 2015.

We know we need more points on our contract but we are waiting to hear about the Poly so transferring and renting is good for now. Thanks!!

You can only purchase one-time-use points at 7 months, so you won't be able to book the entire reservation now.

Thanks! I forgot about that. Anyone know if you are able to transfer into your contract and rent the 24 from Disney with the same use year?

Whether you transfer points in has no impact on whether you can purchase one time use points. You can purchase up to 24 one time use points at 7 months or less out and do it only once per use year and that use year is determined by your contract not by any transferor's contract. In essence, with an April use year, you can, at 7 months out, purchase up to 24 one time use points for that May 2015 trip, you can make the purchase only once, and, regardless of whether you purchase less than 24 at that time, you will not be able to purchase any more one time use points for that trip or any other trip that occurs before April 1, 2016.

Great info! Thanks!!!

Hi, when I bought my points I was told that you cannot rent points, only buy them. How do you rent points and how much are they? Also, can you sell points that have already been banked? How much do they typically go for? Thanks so much :)

The OP was asking about Disney's one-time use points option. When making a reservation at 7 months out or less, you can purchase (rent, whatever you want to call it) up to 24 points from DVD at $15 per point and use them for the reservation along with whatever points you have. You can do that only once per use year. It is designed to allow a member who is a little short on points for a trip to easily get the extra needed, although there is actually no requirement that you actually not have enough points in your account to make the reservation. The program does not relate to a member's renting or selling points to another member or a non-member.

As to renting in general, many members have done rentals. The most common method is for an owner to rent by making a reservation in the renter's name using the onwer's points. That is allowed. The other method is for a member to acquire a transfer of points from another member. That technically is not allowed as the rules state points have no intrinsic value but simply represent your ownership interest (which does have value) and thus you cannot transfer points for a cash payment. That is one of the more igmored rules by members since transfers are often done for value.

If you have banked points, you cannot transfer them to anyone, even for free, because neither banked nor borrowed points can be transferred. However, you can use banked points to do a rental by the owner's making a reservation in renter's name; that does not violate any of the transfer rules since no points are actually transferred.

As to the cost of rentals, they are usually stated in a per point amount even when doing a rental by which the owner makes the reservation in another's name, and the price varies but is lately in the $12 to $16 per point range (see, e.g., the Rent/Trade board on this site)
