I just checked the most popular online aution site (can I say the name here). I noted again that some sellers are trying to get $20+/point. What's up with that? :crazy2:

Wrong...did I say wrong? Just very different from the rental prices on this board...about twice as high. What's up with that?

ummmm . . . . someone is trying to see how much the market will bear?

and I guess the more important question is--is anyone buying at that price?

Yes you can ask anything; the question is anyone silly enough to pay it?

Well depending on when the reservation is for I think a significant premium per point is justifiable. (I also think that some rates seen here a bargain basement prices but that is just my opinion.) Plus if someone is using the live.com discount they can save a significant amount by buying thru that particular auction site.

you also have to think that some people out there have absolutely no idea about the DISboards therefor they dont know that they can rent them for $10 a point. What matters is that we know ;)

Yeah, but wouldn't they be comparing the price to what they would pay Disney by doing a cash reservation? And then go with the cheaper of the two? If they get $20 p/pt, good for them but if your competition only charges $15, you won't have many takers!

Now that SSR is almost sold out (I got this info from this board), along with all the developer points, will rental prices here go up, do you think. I agree that $10/point is very low. There seems to have been a flood of points for sale on this board recently. :surfweb:

Are you talking about Ebay? I didn't know we couldn't say that name here (I guess I'll find out fast, huh?)-there is a whole sticky re Ebay on the collectors' board. Anyway, I searched for both current and completed listings, using both DVC and Disney Vacation Club, and find nothing listed for points rentals...But heck, if people can get it, they should go for it! If I'm the renter, I'll stay here but good on them for making a buck or two...that's the point of an auction, after all.

You may post the name Ebay, and even your username there. You are not allowed to link to your own auctions.

As far as rental prices, those are fully negotiable between owner & renter. If you've owned your points for awhile and paid little per point, they may have no issues renting their points for $10, it would cover their dues, their prorated initial investment, and a little more. If I were to rent my points, I'd rather rent to a "good" renter at $10, than a potential problem renter at $20...of course, how would you know the difference, unless you've dealt with the party before?

The DIS R/T board is a service to our members, but it's clearly not the ONLY place to rent a DVC reservation. In fact, I know of several established DIS members who rent elsewhere. Why? One simple reason -- they get much higher prices elsewhere.

It doesn't necessarily follow that someone renting on the DIS R/T board for $10 pp is going to be less problematic than someone renting elsewhere for $20. We hear plenty of complaints about problematic renters here. I'm sure there are some problem customers everywhere.

Tell you what, it would really be nice to get $20 per point for a rental but i am somewhat satisfied with what we have been getting. I've checked out ebay but found that most vacations deals don't even get any bids, unless there do the buy it now things???

I don't rent, but several folks I know who do use either Tug or Red Week, specifically because of the higher prices they get there. And I'm sure there are other sites as well.

The people I'm referring to are not "commercial renters;" they're people who rent a few times a year.

I do know that some commercial renters have used eBay in the past. And yes, I think the "Buy Now" option is what is used.

Certainly you can find these reservations for rent very easily on eBay. They don't rent points, they rent reservations, and you can see multiple sellers asking very high prices. Do a search for the resort names in the Travel section. I too have used eBay to rent points in the past, but never asked anything like what these folks are trying to get.

Lemme tell ya, the points get cheaper when the windows get smaller. I started looking for 268 OKW points 12 months before my vaca date. The cheapest I found was $15, and that was here on The Dis. At about the 9 month to 10 month window, I found them for $11. So I took it. I probably would've waited longer if I didn't need such a big block of points, and GVs are hard to get, so I got it while the gettin was good! It's all what you are willing to pay, although without doing the calculations, I'm thinking $20 might not be that much of a savings over cash. I can't tell you if $11 is worth it or not, Im still 7 months away :thumbsup2 . But the reviews and references my DISer gave me were great, so we'll see. The upside for him is, if all goes smoothly, We will rent points at LEAST every other year from him :lovestruc , that is , until we buy!

October 2008
Studio at OKW is $315/night (without taxes and fees)
Using DVC points, rented at $20/point....
...$160/night Su-Th, $420/night for the weekends...

Even at $20/point, the weekdays are WAY cheaper than Disney's rack rate. If you took a full week and averaged the cost, your rental at OKW would come to about $235/night. That is a VERY substantial savings over Disney. As a renter, I understand the risk involved, but the owner's are entitled to appropriate compensation for the "work" they have to do for the renter. I think anyone looking to rent points should not look at the price being offered, but rather find an owner they are comfortable with. Even at the price of $20/point:scared1: , renters would still be seeing a substantial savings over Disney's rack rate. There should be no complaining from those who are frustrated when they can't find someone to rent to them for the "going rate" of $10/point. We are hoping to buy in this week so our days of renting points will be a fond memory!:wizard:

I think many, if not most, on the R/T board are renting out of need. The people on eBay are most likely selling for a profit. Were they selling just points or a pre-booked "vacation" at a desirable time? Just curious.
