Hey all. Pete mentioned, in the 'cast, when he rented a car for the recent DL trip rental insuracne was only $9. Seems reasonable. But every rental I've checked in MCO, rental insurance runs a ridiculous $50 something a day. It's more than the car! For a 2 week rental, it winds up being more than I pay for coverage on our personal vehicles!

Am I looking at the wrong thing, or do they just gouge you at MCO?

I'm seriously considering, just to do FL tours and rent a car as needed.

Does the company you are choosing to rent with allow you to choose just comp/collision or are they wrapping liability in the insurance package as well? Pete was saying just purchase the comp/collision and skip the liability as a cost saving measure. Just make sure that the person who is signing the rental contract is the person on the insurance policy so the rental car qualifies as a non-owned car. ;)

It looks as if they are wrapping liability into the total as well. Just doing a quick check on Alamo.com a 6 day rental on a Chevy Aveo is $116 with taxes, but adding the rental insurance doubles the price ($114 extra!).

It's coming up that renting a midsize car for our December trip would run $826 for 2 weeks with insurance. $418 without the insurance.

Two things - check out http://www.mousesavers.com/rentalcar.html for discount codes or the second thing is try to Priceline it. If you Priceline it, make sure you are certain about your dates because it isn't refundable. BUT it can be a heck of a savings on the daily rate. We rented in June from MCO for a mid size car and it was $14/day.
The price for CDW varies company to company so it is worth checking out if you choose not to priceline the rental. The rental bills I see (which include MD, WV, DC, and DE) charge CDW at anywhere between $12/day and $18/day. Also, check with your own insurance company - for instance, my company has a benefit that if you have rental car coverage on your auto policy your rental coverage pays up to $400 toward your deductible if you have a rental car that is involved in a comp/coll loss. Because of this, I don't purchase the extra insurance but it doesn't mean it isn't right for others. :thumbsup2
