Absolutely! If your hotel has a free shuttle, you will be able to get to/from the parks, but you will be at the mercy of their schedule - which is not very often. Only the onsite resorts at WDW have frequent bus service.
I would most definitly recommend it if you don't feel like dishing out a bloody fortune in cab fares!! Visit www.mousesavers.com for money saving discount codes on rental cars....
I agree with the previous posters. If you are not staying at a Disney resort you absolutely have to rent a car. Once you park you are free to use the various WDW transportation available. I have read horror stories about people staying off-site and relying on the shuttle service.
Many of us who stay at a Disney resort find no need for a car since WDW provides transportation from early morning until late into the night.
We stayed off-site in '03, and it was a nightmare... you can use public transport, but the last bus was at 8.05pm out of the TTC, meaning you miss the shows in the evening for the most part as a result!
Ten minutes from teh park means ten minutes with no trafic from teh very edge of the property--add up to another half an hour to get to various attractions.
How were you planning on getting around? Where exactly are you staying?

Quite right! Mousesavers is wonderul for info.. And Ducklite is right as usual . You are looking at at least 30 min to get to a park. Esp. Animal Kingdom. Sometimes it feels like I am really trekking to Asia heading out there!
$9 to park at the theme parks. This is good all day for all parks (i.e. you can park at one theme park then drive to another and park there without an additional cost).
