Rental car then DME?

We've been to Disney many times, but our particular arrival situation is new for us. I would appreciate advice, please. DH and I are flying into Fort Lauderdale for a cruise (non-Disney) immediately preceding our Disney vacation. We plan to rent a car from FLL and drive to Disney. The rest of our Disney vacation group will be flying into MCO the same day as we drive to Orlando. They will be using DME. Would DH and I be able to pay for transfers on DME from MCO to our resort? We would then drop our rental car off at an MCO airport car return and travel with the rest of our group. Or would we not be able to join them? If that is the case, then where would be our best option for returning the rental car? We are all staying on site at the Contemporary. Your helpful responses would be most appreciated. I'm certainly not new to planning, but we do not do rental cars usually, and this is the final, and only, item of our trip I am slightly worried about. Thank you in advance for your reply.

You don't need to pay as you are entitled to the ride since you are staying on Disney property. You can call DME and make a reservation for the day you need, choosing a flight that arrives that day (even though you are not on it).

You can use DME - there is no requirement that you fly; only that you are a resort guest when you want DME transfers, just go online or call to book.

If you want to ride with the rest of your group then I would use their arrival flight # to book the inbound leg and plan to drop the car off prior to that arrival time. For the return trip just use your flight # (assuming your flying home from MCO).
