The cost of rental car rates for my trip for the week of Dec. 10th went from $200 to $400 since this morning??? I hear you are better off booking closer to your travel date. I hope they go back down.
i hear ya,,,,this past march i rented a car in syracuse ny for 10 days for $147 total. when i returned home here to florida i went online to book the same dates for next march and was well over $350. GRRRRR!!!!!
Generally I book my car as soon as I have an idea of my dates. I then check regularly to see if there has been a drop. I also do a lot of on-line searching for coupon codes.
In a past trip a 10 day rental from Alamo went from 625$ when booked 9 months in advance and was able to get it down to 350$ over time.
I booked ours back in April for our 13 day trip in September. I booked with an AARP rate with Enterprise and got a rate of $339.19 with tax. My DH told me NOT to book that it would go down closer to our dates; I booked it anyway and figured I could always cancel it. I've been checking every couple of days and it is now over $550 or $600 for the same time frame.
Saturday, I went to Priceline and gave my own bid and it was accepted and I got it down to $276 for the same timeframe and a larger car. I've since cancelled Enterprise.
I booked a mid size SUV for my trip next week at $123.xx; as of 5 minutes ago the same rental is $560.00!!!!
Now I could get a smaller car for less than my $123.xx rate but I think I like the idea of a larger vehicle in areas that I'm not used to driving in....

Keep trying and use any discount codes you can get. I always heard that the closer to the date you are going, the lower the quotes can be too. However, this was not the case the last few times I traveled. Although we tend to travel around holidays/school vacations.
A code that worked for us with Budget was X474200. Enter it in the BCD box. Another one that worked for us with Dollar was OOAG. Not sure if they are still valid, plug them in and try. If not here's a link to the car discount codes on mousesavers...
