Do most people purchase the extra insurance when renting a car? My home policy covers me for rental cars the same way it would if I had my own car. This added insurance triples the cost of the rental car. It costs as much as a plane ticket to rent a car for 4 days!!!

That's a good poll question!

But I'll bet that MOST people who frequent this board do not buy the extra insurance as most people just don't need it.

Our auto insurance also covers rental cars when we travel.

No, I have my own auto insurance plus use a Visa Gold, which provides secondary coverage.

I use a Diner's club which provide primary coverage which means an accident would never result in a claim against my primary coverage.

I carry a $500 deductible collision coverage on at least one of my cars at a time (whichever one is newest). It's a small addon fee to have this cover rental car insurance. I've found the insurance companies more than willing to add it for a week, then yank it off.

I think last year, it cost me about seven bucks to cover the car. Americar (and don't get me started on Americar) wanted $12 a day for similar coverage. On a Suzuki Swift, mind you...

Our policy covers it so we never get it, no matter how hard the pitch (although Avis and Alamo haven't been too bad about arm-twisting). We always carry a copy of our insurance cards just in case they give us a hassle or ask for proof of coverage.
