Rental Car Payment

Okay, this may be something I should know but I can't remember. Do you pay for the rental when you pick it up or at drop off? I know you provide your credit card at pick up but can you then pay cash for the actual fee? If it is at drop off what do you do if the time is before the counter opens?

When you return the car you can change payment methods. I'm not aware of any companies that accept cash at the time of rental.

If you are dropping the car off before the counter is open, you'll have no way to change the payment method.

If I were you and didn't want the hit in the credit card for long, I'd just take the money I'd be paying for the rental (cash) and pre-pay your credit card a few days earlier and just use your credit card.

May I ask where you're returning the car that the counter won't be open when you return it? I'd be leery of that.

That was what I was thinking but it has been a while since I've rented a car. Normally it isn't an issue but all of the expenses for this trip are being split between me and my friend.

The car is being returned at Sanford Airport and the counter won't be open until 8am and our flight leaves about 7:30.

This raises a red flag to me.... but if the counter isn't open, it isn't open.

Consider allowing yourself time to take photos of the car after you park it, perhaps even with that morning's newspaper in the photos ..... I HATE to think that they'd take advantage of you and charge for non-existing dents or something.... if you have photos then you've got a little bit of a come back if they insist there was damage upon return ..... I've returned cars before when the counter is closed and have never had a problem. I was just trying to remember about the payment thing not worrying about whether the rental place will try and take advantage of me and accuse me of damage I didn't do.
