Rental Car or Meers?

We are going with another couple in October to the land of fun. We plan on doing the parks for four days and then one day at Universal and one at Sea World. Would it be something to recommend a car so you can come and go plus get to the other parks at your convenience or just use a taxi or meers? We are staying at Pop Century so I know there is shuttle service to the parks. I just don't know if it would be "wasting" our $$ with a rental car. Plus, don't know how expensive a taxi or meers can be. :confused3

Your thoughts????

Thanks!

Mears isn't too bad price-wise. I forget what it cost, but I personally wouldn't do it again - the attendants were extremely rude and the service wasn't good enough to put up with that...... I use Happy Limo to get back and forth to the airport. It's a bit more expensive for the 2 of us, but worth it more than I can say since it's hassle-free, pleasant, and a direct drive. For 4 people, it might actually be more cost-effective than Mears.

Taxi from Pop to Universal ran me about $25 each way last year.

It also depends on whether you want a car during your stay for off-site stuff. We don't, so a car isn't worth it to me. Check the transportation board for discount ideas - I did that just this morning and found a great deal for the overnight rental we'll need this year to go to Tampa.

Try www.mousesavers.com for updated prices and ideas, too.

Dh and I are also going with friends. We debating getting a car but in the end the convienience is worth it! And we aren't even leaving Disney property!! We are making them split the cost with us.

Round-trip from the airport to a Disney resort will cost you $27 per person.

A towncar from MCO to WDW will cost roughly $80-$100 for up to 4 people.

As pezpam mentioned, a taxi from WDW to Universal will cost you about $25 each way.

Add the cost of getting from the airport to WDW to the cost of getting from WDW to Uni, and you're close to the cost of a rental car. But a rental car gives you the added bennefit of setting your own schedule and never being at the mercy of a service or the WDW busses.

A car is not just wheels and a trunk and an engine and doors. That's what a car needs; but what a car IS, is freedom!

So, if we de share a rental car, what's the best deal we can get? Should we wait until a couple of weeks to book? Is there tolls you have to pay down there? How far would you say that the airport is to Pop Century, Pop to Sea World and Universal...

One more question...I have been reading about a outlet mall which would be somewhat wise to go to for goodies to bring back at a fraction of the cost. Is this close to Pop?

OOPS! What about grocery stores? The other couple wants to get some food for the fridge so is there one close? I promise, last of the questions for a while! Ha. Ha. :wave2:

We went with Budget, got a car for 6 days for $200, but we are going in April. Go to mousesavers.com and check for codes. I was checking every week to see if I got a better deal

There area couple outlets in the area, we never take the time to drive off property, but I know they have some good stuff.

I know everyone has their own opinion regarding the grocery stores, but whatever you do, AVOID GOODINGS!! To expensive. We used to go to the SuperWalmart on 192, but I heard there is a new Winn-Dixie.

Have a great trip!!

Check out L&M car rental
L & M

They are a local company. We used them last year and are using them again when we go in April (11 more days :bounce: ). Our friends also used them in January and were very satisfied. Our rate for a week will be about $130 (incl. taxes & fees) for a mid-size. A full-size was only $1 more. Make sure you know if any quotes you get from companies include taxes & fees as these can add another $30-$50 to the base rental price.

L&M is located in the Airport terminal so you don't have to mess with getting shuttled to their lot. There was no line (well, maybe one person ahead of us) at the rental counter. We were there the week before Easter, so it was a busy time. Most of the other rental agencies had fairly lengthy lines. The person at the counter was very friendly and didn't try to pressure us into getting insurance or any other extras. The check in and and check out of the vehicle was quick and easy.

Join The Fastbreak Program With Budget. It's Free. You Bypass All The Rental Car Lines And Go Right To The Fastbreak Counter In The Parking Garage. It's So Quick And Simple. We Like Renting A Car BECAUSE We Can Come And Go As We Please And Drive To The Parks, Except Mk. The Shuttles In The Park's Lots Come Quick And October Isn't Really Crowded. So My Vote Is For A Car. PLUS IF YOU WANT TO GO OFF SITE IT'S REALLY CONVENIENT. GETTING TO RESORT TO RESORT IS EASIER ALSO BECAUSE THE RESORT SHUTTLES DO NOT GO FROM RESORT TO RESORT.

I started renting once I was splitting my stay and now I always rent. It's SO convenient and very reasonable.

Mears is not that much fun and by the time you add everything up for you to get back and forth, I think the rental will be the same or less. It will certainly be convenient.

I love renting a car to get around even if I don't end up using it at WDW.
