Rental car online check-in, or go to the counter in hopes of getting upgrade/deal

I've been thinking of doing the online check-in with Alamo so we can go right to the lot and pick our car (fullsize). I'm reading a lot of posts about people getting upgraded at the counter or being offered better cars for a small fee. I'd hate to do the online check-in, thereby missing my chance for something better. What are your experiences and what do you think I should do? Thanks

For Alamo, I always do the kiosk check-in in the terminal, takes 3 minutes.

With Alamo, if you do the kiosks, many times when you go out to pick up your car, there might be a upsized car allready in your aisle which you are free to take. It's like a surprise upgrade, not guaranteed, but has happened to us twice at MCO. Good luck.
