Rental car insurance?

We usually don't buy the insurance offered for rental cars but I'm wondering if it would be smart to buy it for a trip to Yosemite. With all that I've been reading about bears damaging cars, I'm considering it.
Someone reported that even though they were careful to not leave anything at all in their car, both cars that parked on either side of them did. (food "hidden" in trunk) :rolleyes1 So while the bears went wild on the neighboring cars, they also jumped on the hood of the innocent car in the center of it all.

So I looked up the insurance and it's described a Collision Damage Waiver. Bear damage isn't a collision so how does that work?

You would need comprehensive insurance to cover an act of nature like a bear.

However, no offense meant by this. I live in bear country and think your concerns are a bit absurd. Don't waste money on something that is so rare it only gets media attention because of its rarity.

I've had food in my car time and time again when bears are in the area and nothing has happened to me.

Thanks. On the NPS website & yosemitefun.com they make it sound like it pretty much will happen if you leave anything in your car overnight, despite multiple warning signs. Even a camera bag will make a bear think there could be something edible in the car.

While I'm glad to hear it's not a daily occurance, I still won't take the chance of leaving anything in the car but I will skip the insurance.

NPS spends a lot of time on educating the public to preserve the natural resources.

A common saying is a fed bear is a dead bear. Because if bears realize that human's stuff can be a food supply, they will return to it over and over and eventually become forceful and dangerous. When this happens bears get 3 strikes. They relocate the bear. Bear returns to area of seeking food from humans, so they relocate the bear again. If it happens again then they kill the bear.

The NPS does not put out thousands of warning signs so your tent isn't torn up, or cooler ripped apart. It's so people don't lead to the death of bears.

That makes sense. Thanks for the info. :goodvibes
