I'm looking to rent a car while in port in Cozumel and was hoping that someone could steer me in the best direction. I have 5 people in my party and would love to hear from another group who numbered 5 as to what type of car they rented.
Thanks everyone!

We rented a car from Hertz on our 3/29 cruise. We had a blast driving around ourselves and loved the freedom.

We had six in our party...4 adults, 2 children in car seats, so we rented two cars. Our car was a Nissan 4 door with a/c. On the internet, it was listed as seating 5 adults. It was exactly the same size as my Toyota Corrolla. 5 adults? Maybe, if one of them is skinny and can sit in the middle of the back seat.

I would definitely recommend Hertz. It is within easy walking distance of the pier and they were very friendly and helpful. Make reservations on the internet under "main office"...that's the office closest to the pier where the Magic docks. Be sure to take your printed confirmation with you. They were having a hard time with their computer that day, so it cut a lot of waiting time just handing them the confirmation info.

There was another local company right by Hertz, but I don't remember the name. It looked pretty busy, so it may be a good option as well. Anyone have any info.?

Avis is also there, plus lots of local outlets.

Some quotes I got:

Hertz online Cozumel

$ 2.30 (10% Tax)
$15.00 (loss / collision damage waiver)
$ 3.00 (Personal accident insurance / personal effects coverage)
$43.40 (Total - plus any gas you use)

AVIS
Subcompact Class - Chevrolet Pop or similar Seats 4

$26.96 (base rate)
$ 2.70 (10% Tax)
$18.99 (loss / collision damage waiver)
$ 3.99 (Personal accident insurance / personal effects coverage)
$10.99 Additional Liability Insurance
$63.63 (Total plus any gas you use)

I also got a quote via e-Mail from Lesspay http://www.islacozumel.net/services/lesspay/ (by John Devries - lesspay@prodigy.net.mx) for a VW Safari (A VW "The Thing" in the US:

$30 plus $10 insurance plus 10% tax = $44 a day.

What I did notice during my Carnival cruise in Jan. The National US car rental agencies seemed to have cars in better shape then the local companies....We rented from a local company...and I'm convinced for the same price we could have rented a jeep from Avis, Hertz...for the same amount...
