Rental Car code & coupon code ?

This might have been discussed before, but I'm rather new here.

My question is can I use one company's discount code and then a different company's coupon code. Here is what I am trying to do. Use the Budget UPROMISE BCD # and then an entertainment coupon # to get a free upgrade. When trying to book this online, it doesn't show the coupon upgrade, but it doesn't refuse it either. Anyway, has anyone ever done this before? Thanks in advance for your help!

I do know you can do that on National, not sure about Budget.

If it doesn't show the upgrade, how would you know you got it? Just curious.
