Rental car category upgrade question

I need a vehicle the seats at least 6 people. From what I'm seeing, the cheapest car category that I can get is a mini van. How does booking work if I have a coupon code for a category upgrade? Does the code just show the price of the next category down therefore already charging me the lower category's price for the van? Or, do I have to know what the next category down in, book that, then just expect to get the correct category when I arrive? If the latter, what category do I actually book in order to get a mini van or other 7 seat vehicle?

Can't give you a definitive answer because that depends on what company you are using and exactly what the coupon says. Many coupons say "if available". Others limit upgrades to specific car classes and a van might not be included.

To be safe you may want to rent a van that you know will fit all of you and look for a coupon for x% or x$ off.

If you need a certain sized car, your best bet is to book that category, not a lower category, even if you have an upgrade coupon. There might not be any upgrades available.

Thank you. I wasn't sure if the coupon resulted in the price being set to a lower category's price or if they actually give an upgrade and if they do give an upgrade if it's guaranteed. I'm finding it cheaper to use $ or % off coupons but I didn't want to rule out potential discounts.
