Rental car availability

Has anyone ever had an experience where the class of rental car they reserved wasn't available and the rental car company made you pay extra for the next class up? I've never heard of this happening, but I heard of a instance where this happened to someone. I would have thought that if the classification of car you reserved wasn't available that they would either a) give you an upgrade for free, or b) give you a lower class of car at a lower price.

Anyone run into this before?

I have many times gotten to the counter to find out that the class I reserved wasn't there. I even had a guy really try to sell me an upgrade, before he told me that the class I reserved wasn't available. But in each case (probably a dozen or so) I have always gotten the next available class up (sometimes more than one class) for the amount of my original reservation.

I'd think that would be in the agreement somewhere.

Never heard of such a thing. Care to name the company that did this to someone? I might think twice about renting from them in November if that's their policy.

I'm not sure which company it was. I do know that it didn't happen in Orlando, so hopefully we'll all be fine - LOL!
