Rental Car Across the Border?

Hi,

I want to ship some things to the UPS store across the border in NY from stores that dont ship to Canada. We dont own a car as we live downtown Ottawa and only rent when we do.

Could we rent a car and take it over the border for a day or even the weekend to pick items up?

Anyone done this or know if this would be a problem?

You can take rental cars over the border. Simply tell them when you are picking up the car. I had to drive to Wisconsin for work and I rented an SUV from Hertz.

Not 100% sure but perhaps each rental agency has their own guidelines. Why not just make an inquiry with the rental company

We have done this several times with no problem. The one time there was a problem, we had rented the car in Winnipeg where we live and so that's what we said when they asked at the border where we were coming from. However, we didn't realize that the rental car plate said Quebec, so we were actually pulled inside the customs station while they called the rental company and gave the car a thorough inspection.

We phoned a few rental companies and policies do vary. Some will not allow out of the country, some will. I do know that 6 years ago we drove (from Winnipeg) and used National because there was no restrictions about going to the States. The girl at the counter was new and a little shocked when we returned their van with an extra 5000+ Kms on it. Can you guess where we took it?

Thanks for your replies! I was more concerned with the border agents than the rental cars but I see now that people have done it
