We are new DVC'ers and are possibly looking to rent / transfer points for our upcoming vacation. We have some "left over" points, which we received as an add on to the resale, but it will not cover our vacation.

What is the difference, if any, between renting and transferring points? Are some points non-transferable? Our points are in "reservation status", so will we even be able to rent or transfer points? Yikes...there is so much involved! But it is so much fun.... :bounce:

AFAIK, you cannot transfer points in reservation status.

Reservation status points expire at the end of your use year and cannot be banked or borrowed.

You can use them to make a reservation at one of the non-DVC WDW resorts (except a value resort, the BC, WL or BWI), for a Disney cruise or any other option in the Disney Collection, the Conceirge Collection or the Adventurer Collection. You cannot use them to reserve a stay at a DVC resort or for anything in the World Passport Collection (exchanges via Interval International).

HTH.

Thank you for your quick response. After rereading my post, I realized it sounds like we want to rent/transfer our points...

I am hoping to rent or transfer points from someone, because we are short points. Perhaps the same rules apply to us (wanting to rent/transfer) as to be the one who rents/transfers.

I hope I am making some sense! ::MinnieMo

You can rent points from another member and have them transferred into your account. You can combine those points with your own to make reservations.

If you want, you can rent a reservation from another member, too. Anyone can do this - no need to be a member to rent a reservation. (Reservations are usually priced by the number of points it costs to make them).

If you rent a reservation, the member you rent from retains control of the reservation. If you have points transferred into your account, they are yours to use as you choose (subject to all the usual reservation-making rules). The transferred points retain their original home resort status.

You might want to state your request on the DVC rent trade board.

Carol, I'm not sure this is accurate. It is my understanding that people have transferred both holding account and reservation points. I can see nothing in the paperwork that would prevent such other than if the holding account points are banked or borrowed. But I'm sure this is one of those issues where you'll get a different answer on different phone calls.

Dean, You are probably right - I'm not sure. I looked through my stuff and can't see anywhere it specifically says one way or the other. (But then, I can't say I've ever seen anything written in any detail about lots of the "rules" MS has).

As you say, it may depend on who you get when you call. I can't see where it would hurt DVC to allow it - surely the system can keep track of the status of transferred points - whether they are current, banked, borrowed, holding or reservation. However, if they can't keep track of the use year very well after current points are transferred, they probably can't track the use year of reservation points either. So theoretically, if they allow it, one could extend the life of reservation points by transferring them.

Anyway, I hope the OP can find a way to use the reservation points she is getting with her resale. If she needs more to make a reservation, it would probably be just as easy to have a few current year points transferred to her account or even easier to just borrow the points she needs to complete the reservation.

Thank you to everyone for your help. As new DVC'ers, we are certainly learning as we go. We haven't received our informational packet yet, and I am hoping many of our questions can be answered once we read it. In the meantime, the DIS boards have been a great place to have questions answered.

I think we will probably borrow a point to use towards our vacation. Seems like the thing to do; makes sense.

Thanks again for all your help. ::MinnieMo
