Rent or Transfer - which is better?

That's what I thought, Beca - that's why I'm thinking it's smarter to rent from someone with a later UY (because rented points maintain the rentors UY) and transferred pts would assume my June UY (not smart for a May trip?). I'm even confusing myself now (like that's hard  ) ! So I'm thinking that the UY can be an important thing to consider when deciding between renting and transferring points.

No, transferred points do not assume your UY...they stay the same as the UY of the person you get them from.

Ex: I transferred points into someone's account. I have a Sept. UY, and I transferred 210 BWV points into his account. He has an Aug UY OKW points.

By DEFAULT, the BWV points became OKW points, but he had MS manually override that. However, UY does NOT change, so he had all of his OKW points with an Aug UY in his account, as well as 210 BWV points with a Sept. UY.

Does this make sense?

Sorry, Beca, but you actually are WRONG about this, at least in practice. In theory, things are supposed to work this way, but they don't. I got somewhat nailed by this a couple of years back (and I want to make it clear that I don't blame my fellow member for apparently taking advantage of a system that he apparently knew was broken). We have a June use year and closed on an add on through Disney after May 1. When I posted the points for rent at $7 per point just trying to get something out of these points that would be expiring in less than a month, I had a member respond immediately asking me to transfer them to him. This experienced member APPARENTLY knew that as soon as I transferred the points to him (and they assumed his use year rather than mine) they would no longer be expiring at the end of the month. This member, (a very, very nice guy I might add), it appears runs a rental business (I have seen his ads on ebay) and could have then turned around and rented my transferred points at a profit because they didn't expire. I think this glitch really, really stinks, but I also acknowledge that I am unlikely to have gotten much of anything out of my points if the glitch didn't exist.

That is REALLY strange, because I just transferred points into another member's account last month (my example above was NOT hypothetical), and the points DID retain my later UY when they were transferred into the other member's account. MS told me that the "home resort" glitch was still a glitch, but that the UY system was working as it is stated in our Member handbook....all transferred points retain their original UY.

Maybe since this happened you, DVC has changed the system. Surely they realize that they are getting the short end of the shaft when members were doing this. Interesting....they say they cannot fix the "home resort" glitch...but, this one appears to have been fixed.

Anyway...to the OP...there seems to be some dissent on this on this subject. Call MS directly and ask them...then do whatever works best for you. Good luck!!

Beca,

I think you answered your own question. Because yours was the later use year, it retained your use year. In my case, mine was the earlier use year and they allowed the member to put them into his account in his later use year and they picked up his home resort status. I think we didn't have different experiences with this, but rather the circumstances were such that in your case their was an advantage to the transferee of keeping your use year. In any case, it is messy! :) BTW, I wasn't trying to be harsh but rather just emphatic based on my experiences.

Doctor P...I didn't think you were harsh at all....and, I hope I did not come across that way, either!! Lord knows, I have a LOT to learn about DVC, and am grateful to be corrected anytime I am wrong...I would hate to pass on mis-information.

But, I think in this case...there may not be a "right" answer. What happens when people do transfers may vary depending on who accesses the account. But, if the person "pushes" MS...they can require MS to honor what is in our member handbook, even if the default is not to. The person to whom I was transferring points REALLY wanted BWV (his home resort was OKW). He was trying to get enough BWV points together to get a grand villa there. Well, when the points hit his account, they had "become" OKW points, even though the member handbook stated otherwise. He "informed" DVC that was not acceptable, and per their own rules needed to be changed. He said it took 5 phone calls, but he FINALLY got all of his transferred points listed as BWV points. So, while there may be some question as to where the UY will default to...surely the renter can "force" MS to follow their own rules.

Wow.

I had VWL points transferred from a co-worker of mine a couple of years ago, and I had to deal with their "software limitations" then, too.

I would have thought they would have gotten that fixed by now!

But, just as others described - a supervisor had to intervene and manually make them act like VWL points. I still had the issue with the shortened use-year, though.

One last thing - you do not have to have the full address of the transferee - when I transfered to a member all I had was their name and city - I didn't have their account number.

I purposely did NOT ask the transferee for their account number so I would not have that liability of knowing someone else's. MS still made the transfer over the phone, with just me, with no problems.

I got my payment up front (Paypal), made the call, and immediately called the transferee with the transaction number. Thank goodness one transferee than called to confirm, because MS had sent twice as many points to them! They and MS got it figured out and let me know after it was all taken care of - THANKS to that member who was so honest!
