Rent a scooter for the week or rent from the park as needed?

They also come with a little fan attached to the steering bar, which is really nice during warm weather. You can request an additional rear basket to hold gear and bags but it may not fit on some of the buses, although you can take it off before you park the scooter on the bus. The scooter also comes with a drink holder and a USB port for charging a cell phone,

I saw that it had the fan and I think she's going to love that, especially while wearing a mask! I ordered the sun shade for her, but maybe should have ordered the rear basket?

Thanks for all the info!

Hello all!

This is a brand new consideration for us so I'd like some input from the experts.

We are likely going down in April with my mom (she and I will be fully vaccinated by then :-) ) who is 77. She gets around okay around here but I notice she gets winded and tired even walking a quarter mile in our neighborhood. She's been to WDW with us many times and always seemed to manage ok but she seems to have slowed down over the last couple years and I'm thinking it may be time to consider getting a scooter for her for at least some of the time.

We are staying at YC and would like to walk to DHS but that would just be too much for her. I also think just walking around EPCOT and AK would be too much for her. I think walking at MK and DHS would be ok because of the nature of those parks and the frequent breaks.

If we just rented scooters at the parks as needed, how much do they cost? Would we have to walk all the way to the front of EPCOT to rent or are they available at the IG entrance? Of course, if we rent at the parks, then we wouldn't have one for "walking" to DHS so we'd have to take the Skyliner or boat. If we do a week long rental, how much of a pain is it to drive it for a newbie? I'm thinking getting onto the bus may be tricky for her.

Any advice from y'all if you've been in this position would be greatly appreciated!
I recently returned from a week in WDW and I rented a scooter from K&M Mobility, for $25 a day. For shorter trips, the cost might be higher per day. Loved having it to and from my room, and also at Disney Springs. They delivered it to my resort, and picked it up when I was done. On my previous trip I rented an ECV at one of the WDW parks and was shocked at how slow it was --- people walking were passing me like I was sitting still! So I definitely recommend renting off-site, to save money and to have a better scooter.

You can charge your scooter anywhere there is an electrical outlet. You may have to ask a cast member where one is located, and try to find an outlet nearby an attraction. Then you can go enjoy the attraction while your scooter charges. I have also used Gold Mobility and have had their batteries last over a day and a half. They also come with a little fan attached to the steering bar, which is really nice during warm weather. You can request an additional rear basket to hold gear and bags but it may not fit on some of the buses, although you can take it off before you park the scooter on the bus. The scooter also comes with a drink holder and a USB port for charging a cell phone, but remember that it uses battery power as it charges. You might want to bring an additional disposable rain poncho to cover the seat and handle bars in case of a shower. The rental company provides a shower-cap type device that will cover the electronics on the scooter.
and make sure if wearing a poncho in rain that it also goes over the back of seat while sitting. dont ask why I say this

Over the handlebars/steering in the front too!
In general, I have found that It is better to use a shower cap over the handlebars/steering that way the poncho protects you and it protects the steering. Also you can use a shower cap over the basket to help keep things dry, obviously the holes in the basket makes this not work completely, although I have line the inside of the basket with a shopping bag and once the top is covered everything stays pretty dry.

I learned the hard way that anytime you leave your scooter outside for an extended length of time (like for dinner) it's always a good idea to cover the seat with a poncho at least I learned that the hard way Went in to Tusker House for the character lunch, sunny when we went in, sunny when we came out But while we were inside, there was a brief shower that seemed to dump all its rain on the seat of my scooter

Before our 1st scooter rental, I read a helpful tip that said to bring a chamois. I purchased one and stored it in a zip lock bag. Used it several times. I also purchased industrial sized clear trash bags to place over the steering and controls area.

We had tried the clear trash bags before we found Gold Mobility, they sometimes got in the way. The shower caps does the trick and the nice thing is if it gets torn, just stop ask for another from your resort. As I said before, one over the tiller and one over the basket does the trick nicely.
