Rent a car vs. Not renting a car.

Hi. This may be repititious, but my family is going on an impulsive trip to Disney World on Thursday. We are flying down from New York for 5 days and will try to stay on resort. Question: do you think it's better to not rent a car as we will probably only stay on resort the whole time, or should we rent a car? I've been looking at sites like Budget and a mid-size car for the time we plan on being there is only $120 (after taxes). I don't know how much it cost to take a shuttle down there and back, but is this pretty decent? Any quick responses will be much appreciated.

The shuttle cost depends on how many people there are in your family. If there are 4 of you, the cost of a rental car will not be much more and you will have a lot more freedom to get around where and when you want to. If you are going to go to a character breakfast or might want to eat a non-Disney meal, the rental car really helps. We also like the car better when we stay for fireworks, Fantasmic, etc because we don't have to wait forever to get onto the bus to get back to the hotel.

I just posted a thread indicating that I found a great rate at Alamo next week for a weekly rental of a midsized car using a $15 Entertainment coupon that came to $94 including all taxes and fees. If you have an Entertainment book, you might check it out.

I think the shuttle is around $24 per person round trip. But also, don't forget to add in the tips for the person putting your luggage in the shuttle and taking the luggage out of the shuttle ($2 per bag). Still sounds like a rental would be your best bet, plus you have the flexibility of going to the store. You can still take WDW trans. if you want.

It sounds like a good deal for the car. We used a mixture of Disney transportation and our own car while we were there. It was nice to have the option of driving. We could go back to our resort for an afternoon break and then drive back to the parks for the evening. Usually could park right up front during those evening hours. But then some folks like the idea of not driving at all at WDW.

We ALWAYS rent a car at WDW. I just like the flexibility it gives us and to be honest I'm not a big fan of the bus. :D
