Reno, Nevada - Worth Visiting

I'm just curious, what made you decide on Animal Ark? You had to have driven right past my house to get there :3dglasses Did you go for the cheetah races?

Wow, small world!! We picked up a bunch of flyers/brochures at one of hotels while we were there and the Animal Ark was one of them. We missed the cheetah races unfortunately but we did get to see the bear (and subsequent squirrel/chipmunk) feedings.

I can't remember if it's Harrah's or Harveys (both owned by Harrahs, pretty sure it's Harvey's) that has lake view rooms. Anyway we stayed up there when we went to Reno (yuck). The Tahoe portion of the trip (except for the drive down from the lake yikes) was the best part of the whole time we spent there. Ask for a high room and lake view and it'll be grand.

Dixie Paddle boat ride was super, they have a lunch ticket you can buy, food was so so I probably wouldn't buy it but I got it free through Harvey's promotion.

I will tell you that if you decide to drive around the lake, that the opposite side has some really narrow high up nothing to keep you from plunging to your death type of roads. I'm from the plains, I don't do mountains well LOL, but I drove everything else just fine, but the roads on that side were too much for me. Have the driver with the nerves of steel drive that portion of the road.

Someone said they paid $25 dollars for parking, Harveys' has free parking, well we valet but it was only the price of the tip we gave.

I am a regular at Reno, and I agree and disagree with what was posted here.

First of all, yes, the city itself, downtown, is ICK. Silver Legacy is very nice and we are regulars there. It is not however...nonsmoking. The restaurants and open areas upstairs are nonsmoking, but you can still smoke in the casino just like always.

My husband and I are big gamblers, and we love Silver Legacy. I do not think Reno is worth visiting for other things if you are not a gambler...hiking, mountains, white water rafting...I can get those at other locations besides Reno.

There are some great restaurants and night life in Reno.

Actually the casino itself has both smoking and non-smoking sections. Just like restaurants used to. :) That's why our first trip we spent most of our time at the SL, we didn't feel like our throats were closing off from the smoke. :) I have asthma/allergy issues with smoke so I try to avoid it. The SL was absolutely heads above the other casinos in terms of being able to breath well. :)

The reason the Silver Legacy does not seem smoky is because it has an incredibly high ceiling, actually there really isn't really a ceiling, so it doesn't trap the smoke. But downstairs in the main casino, I have never seen a nonsmoking section, maybe upstairs, but not downstairs where I've been. I'll ask...I'm going on Friday for the weekend. Or maybe I'll ask my casino host before I go. But Silver Legacy is very open and like others have said, is heads above other casinos.

I didn't know there were cheetah races and I live off of Red Rock Rd.

LOL You live out off of Red Rock? So do we! The cheetah races are a monthly event, there was an article about 2 weeks ago in the RGJ - my gosh, small world!

That's too funny. We just moved out here about 8 months ago. Even though we have lived in Reno for years, we haven't gone to the Animal Ark. We live not too far from the Sierra Safari Zoo. Need to talk DH into taking DD & me to Animal Ark. Need to see the cheetah races.

I think we might be neighbors - I'll send you a PM - we have lived out here for almost 14 years.
Sierra Safari used to have free Mondays, I usually take DD a couple of times per summer.
