*If* they release a Free Dining promo in April like past years, can I book an 8 or 10 night reservation and later delete some days to tailor to the specific 4 or 5 nights we want? We won't know our availability exactly in April. I'm wondering if I could theoretically book a longer trip that spans 2 weekends and then later delete a few days on one end or the other, and not loose the promo.

Only if the promo has current inventory for the new dates when you try to modify. You can't simply remove dates from an existing reservation. WDW took this loophole away about 2 years ago.

There is definitely evidence that Disney did away with the ability to do this, and that now you would need to cancel the original reservation and make a new one with the new dates, if available.

I recently (last week) modified dates on a free dining package that I have for August and was able to do it though. I wasn't removing nights though, just changing dates by a day. (Instead of 8/19-8/28, we are going 8/20-8/29). I was able to do it thankfully, because the difference in airfare was HUGE!!

We were not able to do it last year. As a PP said, you have to cancel and rebook the whole package.
