Remember the McDonald's Disney Millenium Glasses?

I found this forum searching because my daughter was getting one of our disney glasses (we use them often and have collected a good set for daily use in my kitchen) and it shattered everywhere! Cut her leg and sent tiny pieces (as well as a few large) all over.

She didn't drop it...she was just taking it out of the cupboard.

I'll have to read up more on glasses doing that in general...

Holy resurrected thread, Batman!

agnes!

One of our McDonald's Disney glasses was sitting in the sink and exploded in the middle of the night last night. We thought someone (a cat) had knocked something off the counter. Could not find anything until we looked in the sink and it was in several a hundred pieces. The base of the glass was sort of intact but several cracks were through out the base and it was cold to touch. Thank goodness no one was holding it at the time. Really like these glasses but they are all going in the trash so no one gets hurt in the future. Very shocking!. Some of the pieces were laying in the sink and you could see the pattern still together. What would cause this. Something in the glass that is defective?

Crap. Forgot to look at the start date again.

I use them everyday. I wished I would of got a lot more of them. Still have them all None of them broke

Someone more science-y might be able to chime in here about why this happens. Maybe hairline fractures in the glass combined with heat from the dishwasher or something, I don't know.

Anyway, somewhat off topic but I really miss the McDonalds/Disney partnership. Used to be able to get cool Disney commemorative stuff there like the glasses all the time (and remember the huge set of 100 Years of Magic figures?). Now you can't even get Disney Happy Meal toys anymore. :(

McDonalds especially has been doing this since the 1950's The Shrek recall never should have happened in 2010 becuase such things have been known to them way before that.
In 2002, McDonald's recalled about 100,000 Chicago Bears bobblehead collectibles sold at 400 Chicago-area restaurants because of excessive levels of lead in the paint.
McDonald's announced Aug. 23, 2016, that the company was recalling fitness bands that it had put in Happy Meals because they might cause skin irritation or blistering on children. (U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission)
McDonald's is recalling 29 million fitness wristbands distributed in Happy Meals after dozens of children reportedly developed skin irritations.

This is not all but should demonstrate enough... while many companies have been doing this with more than enough information not to over the decades, watch the movie about McDonalds with Michael Keaton to understand why McDonalds has no problem to keep trying this in one form or another.

While I have absolutely no idea what bobblehead and fitness band recalls have to do with self-shattering glass, https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spontaneous_glass_breakage
but "The Founder" looks like an interesting movie. Wikipedia described it as a comedy-drama, while imdb lists as (just plain) drama.
A comedy? I definitely wouldn't say so. It's about how Ray Kroc ruthlessly manipulated the McDonald brothers out of their own company. Business is business, I guess but it felt sad to me. :( Spoiler alert - they weren't striving to building a billion-dollar empire; their focus was on perfecting the product and service model. Kroc saw huge profit potential in standardizing operations and cutting corners on quality and value. I guess he was ahead of his time in that regard.

I have one of those glasses, although we don't use it much. Nineteen years and it hasn't exploded yet! I love Zombie threads... so interesting to see what was of concern/interest all those years ago!

We still have all four and use them all the time. No explosions yet. We have some of the 25th anniversary ones, too.

We use them every day - have about 10 of them
