I was really little but I remember the day the Challanger blew up-
I also did a report the teacher Christa Macullife (sp) in the 5th grade...

If we never forget- they are never forgotten.

I remember the day the Challenger was lost.
I was in college and was glad I didnt have class that day because I really wanted to watch the launch because it had an atronaut that was born here in Akron, Judith A. Resnik.
But I woke up late, I quickly turned on the tv and the first images I saw were of parts of the shuttle raining down from the sky. I didnt know what was going on. Then I heard the newcasters say that Challenger had blown up. I just sat there stunned...tears in my eyes.

This is a very sad time of the year around here. :( Please remember their family and friends, as well.

We are all NASA "buffs" in our family.
I was watching the Challenger take off. It was such a sad, sad day :(

I remember last year sitting in front of the TV hearing reports of the Columbia.

My thoughts are with all the family members of those brave astronaunts.

It's been a long road,
To get from there to here.
It's been a long time,
but my time is finally here.

And I can feel a change
in the wind right now.
Nothing's in my way.
And they're not gonna
hold me down no more.
No they're not gonna hold me down.

'Cause I've got faith of the heart.
I'm going where my heart
will take me.
I've got faith to believe.
I can do anything.
I've got strength of the soul.
And no one's going to bend
or break me.
I can reach any star.
I've got faith,
I've got faith,
Faith of the heart.

It's been a long night,
Trying to find my way.
Been thru the darkness,
Now I finally have my day.

And I will see my dream
come alive at last.
I will touch the sky.
And they're not gonna hold
me down no more.
No they're not gonna change
my mind.

'Cause I've got faith of the heart.
I'm going where my heart
will take me.
I've got faith to believe.
I can do anything.
I've got strength of the soul.
And no one's going to bend
or break me.
I can reach any star.
I've got faith,
Faith of the heart.

I know the wind's so cold,
I've seen the darkest days.
But now the winds I feel,
Are only winds of change.
I've been thru the fire,
And I've been thru the rain,
But I'll be fine.

'Cause I've got faith of the heart.
I'm going where my heart
will take me.
I've got faith to believe.
I can do anything.
I've got strength of the soul.
And no one's going to bend
or break me.
I can reach any star.
'Cause I've got faith,
'Cause I've got faith,
Faith of the heart...

Faith of the heart.
I'm going where my heart
will take me.
I've got faith to believe.
And no one's going to bend
or break me.
I can reach any star.
'Cause I've got faith,
'Cause I've got faith,
Faith of the heart...

I remember exactly where I was when the Challenger tragedy happened - eating lunch in 9th grade. I will never forget that horrible day.

Last February my mom and I went to Orlando. When our plane landed at MCO, the pilot sadly announced that the Space Shuttle Columbia was missing. We couldn't bring ourselves to watch TV that whole trip - it was just too sad. We knew that the debris had landed all over our area. That evening we watched Illuminations, and it was especially moving. Now whenever I see Illuminations or listen to the cd and hear "We go on through the joy and through the tears, We go on to discover new frontiers" I am reminded of that sad day.

A friend from college was married to one of the Challenger astronauts. When I realized it was her husband who died, it became very personal for me.

And the remains from Columbia were brought to our town before they were brought back to NASA.

Bumping back to page one. This thread is too important to go away so quickly.

I have been lucky enough to see 2 shuttle launches. First time was while I was at Epcot. Seeing this object rise from the horizon and race across the sky was so awesome. Then next time was back in December of 2001. Because of delays Endeavors launch was pushed back to the week I was going to be there. Even though it meant missing a day at the park I went anyway. Well this was the first launch after 9/11 and it seemed that the skies were filled with jet fighters and helicopters . Well weather cancelled it and it was scheduled for the next early evening. I wasnt going to miss this so I left Univeral early and drove to the coast again. I didnt have tickets for the cape but did get as get as possible with a great view.
When Endeavor lit up its engines...WOW!!!!!..it lit up the early evening sky! It took a few moments for the sound to reach me but when it did...wow! Even though we were that far away all of marveled that we could feel it. As I watched it shoot up into the sky I had tears in my eyes. I had always been a NASA buff but now after being part of this, it was like now a personal part of me. After I got back home I went out on a cold snowy night and watched it streak across the night sky.

Then last year my gf and I were driving to my house when we turned on the radio and heard about Columbia...When I we pulled in the driveway my gf held me tight as I fought back tears...

Just this past December I visited Kennedy Space Center and saw the launch pads where Challenger and Columbia have lifted off from...made a tingles run up my spine.

Shutterbug's post has reminded me of a couple of happy shuttle memories that I have. In June 2002 we were lucky enough to see one of the shuttles (I'm not sure which) take off while we were at POR. A CM in the food court started chatting with us and told us that if we went and stood on the bridge, we might see the space shuttle ascend. Of course we went out hoping to catch a glimpse, and what we saw was spectacular. It was one of the many highlights from that particular trip.

One night in 1999 we were out on our porch here in Texas when suddenly the brightest light appeared in the south. It shot across the sky from west to east leaving a beautiful glowing trail. My mother was here and shouted that it was the space shuttle. It was a beautiful sight to behold.
