Breast-Feeding Mother

Judge Intervenes in Case of Mother Who Breast-Fed 8-Year-Old
The Associated Press

U R B A N A, Ill., Nov. 22 — A judge gave the state legal guardianship today of an 8-year-old boy whose mother was breast-feeding him as recently as last year.

Lynn Stuckey, 34, will retain custody of the boy. Judge John DeLaMar said she had not abused the boy in any way, but made bad decisions that could cause him long-term emotional harm.
The judge said the state Department of Children and Family Services will handle counseling or legal matters affecting the boy. Stuckey will continue to handle day-to-day care.

She said he stopped breast-feeding her son last summer.

DeLaMar said Stuckey's most misguided decision was appearing on ABC's Good Morning America program to promote her philosophy of letting her son slowly wean himself from breast feeding. The program included footage of her breast-feeding the boy while reading to him.

The appearance created "almost prurient interest" and subjected her son to stress and emotional harm, the judge said.

"I hope you've learned some painful lessons," DeLaMar said.

Well...I feel so bad for this little boy

I really don't understand her logic in this matter..

How sad for that poor little boy, she is disgusting. Who in their right mind would go on national television and breastfeed their 8 year old?

ok, I find her totally gross and sick. I mean yes, breastfeeding is perfectly natural for infants....NOT AN 8 YEAR OLD.

I don't want to even imagin what he'll be like when he grows up.

I wonder what it was like for that child at school the day after that show aired? :(

I breastfed all of my boys too but not to age 8 or anywhere near that. She said she did it to comfort him. There are many other ways to comfort a child other than breastfeeding him. I dont really think she did it for the child I believe she did it for herself. She even said somtimes milk came out--that means sometimes it didnt. Isnt that the purpose of breastfeeding to give the child milk to help him grow strong and be healthy? I cant think of many ppl that breasfeed when there is no milk coming from your breast.

8 YEARS OLD?!!!That poor child! Was she a single mom? If not, they why did the husband put up with it?

I saw a woman on a news talk show the other day debating that children should be breastfed until the age of TWELVE!! I don't know if it was the same woman. She said the American Academy of Pediatricians recommends age one as a minimum age and that other countries it is acceptable to breastfeed until age 7 or 8. There was a man counter arguing saying - Yes but it is not socially acceptable in our country much after the age of 1. Then another woman argued that 20 years ago it wasn't acceptable at all, and now has become the norm. I agreed with the man, I don't think it will ever be the social norm.

She needs psychiatric help IMHO, not to mention the fact that her son should be in counseling, if he is not already. Very sad...

Geez Nancy!! What kinda place do you live in?!? ROFLOL! :teeth:

yuck - guess those kids will have a hard time later in life! Didnt the kids realize it was wrong/ different? Never mind the mother!

If the kid was raised to think that was normal, he wouldn't see that it wasn't. That is until that show came out. Can you imagine how badly that kid was treated at school?

I have no problem with nursing babies, but I think we have to look at the emotional developmental issues here. That's pre-puberty!!!!! Breastfeeding at that age is setting up a child for some long-term psych issues IMHO!

I would not ever agree with this. But I believe that in either Italy or some where in the Mediterrean that breast feeding to age 6 to 8 is a common practice. I will have to look on the internet to see if I can find where.

I do think that must have been devestating to that child for it to have been aired on tv. Very sad.

Nancy - Hi....good to see you...I am sure you saw lots of news coverage if this was in your home town...Again very sad for this child...
