Does anyone remember a post a few weeks ago where an owner was saying that booking though Disney was cheaper than a points rental? Someone on the resorts board was questioning that and asking when those times were. I couldn't remember the specific examples given, I think it might have been in the summer? Can anyone confirm when those times are?

I can't find the thread but I seem to remember that it was summer. With the discounts given at some of the villas and the deluxe resorts, and that being value season for them but higher points for DVC, it makes CRO possibly less, especially for one bedrooms.

Thanks Sandi. Maybe that owner will see this and post the specific examples I think were listed in that thread. I'm way too lazy to look up rates and points myself to answer someone's question on the resorts board!

Below is a link to a post where I graphed point values relative to cash prices, using rolling 7-day periods to even out the differences.

I think there are differences from resort to resort, but in general Studios will always be a good deal for renting any time of year, but 1-bedrooms and occasionally 2-bedrooms will sometimes dip below the rental prices, especially in summer, and especially if there is a discount on the rack rate available.

While I was not that poster, I can tell you we opted for a cash reservation for our trip 4/21-4/28. We stayed at BCV and with the 30% discount our week cost approx $3200. The 270 points I would have needed would have been $3250. When we added in that housekeeping was included with the cash reservation (and we always pay for housekeeping at least 3-4 days a week), it was definitely cheaper for us to get the cash reservation.

I figured out my price per point on my early Dec. 2010, 10 night AKV 1 br SV stay. I had a 40% room discount, it worked out to $11 per point which was less than what the rental co.s were charging, but @ that time you could sometimes find $9 per point from private parties. Since that time I've seen numerous posts about renting being less expensive and generally for studios it seems to be, but for anything else you really have to run the numbers, IMO.

There are definitely times if Disney offers a good discount, that booking with them is cheaper than renting.

Especially when points required such as summer, weekends, holidays etc. are high.

One has to always figure how which is a the best choice.

The most obvious time this happens is during the second half of summer, when Deluxe/DVC CRO rates are in Value season (and then discounted---this year it was by 30% at most DVC properties), but DVC point costs are still in Magic season.
