BRADENTON, Florida (AP)—The father who got national attention for punching a teacher's assistant in front of Bradenton class full of students is suing the school district.

Dave Swafford was charged after marching into a classroom last month and punching the assistant who he had accused of inappropriately touching his foster daughter. The girl is a student at Lakewood Ranch High School.

Later school officials said the girl's claims were fabricated, and the sheriff's office declined to file charges against the assistant.

An attorney for Swafford has filed suit against the teacher's assistant and the school district. Claims include that school officials failed to take proper steps after learning of the girl's allegations, tried to cover up evidence and fabricated a story that the girl's claims were retaliation for being punished by the assistant at school.

School board attorney John Bowen denies the claims. He says the lawsuit is "so riddled with factual and legal inaccuracies it's almost comical."

My take is school officials are saying she made it up and are dropping it. The father seems to believe his daughter and is claiming they (the school) are trying to cover it up. If it were your daughter and this was being swept under the rug what would you do, let it go or sue?

I wouldn't go around punching people from a teenager's statement. People were calling him father of the year, but I think he showed a lack of restraint. If you believe your daughter is telling the truth, you must go through the proper channels from the start. Self control is one ot the traits that keeps us apart from the wild animals in the jungle. He acted foolishly and unfortunatley, now, no one is going to take him seriously.

No, I absolutely agree with that he should have shown restraint. But, just because he didn't do that from the start doesn't mean his daughter may not have been a victim. Cover-ups happen all the time. If you thought someone inappropriately touched your daughter and nothing was getting done about it, the proper channels are better late then never to sort out the truth. BTW Anyone know why the aide didn't file charges against the father, that seems pretty open/shut?

Maybe he didn't file charges because he wanted the ordeal over with since it reached national news..who knows. I would think now since the Foster father filed this suit, the aide might file one of his own.
