We are thinking of relocating with my DH company. We own a house and have 4 children. For those of you that have relocated, what do companies usually offer or pay for? We want to have a list ready of our wants and needs when the time comes. Thanks so much.

We will be moving this spring, DH's company promoted him. We just found out that they pay for the move but that is about it....I was thinking they would pay the realtor fee....guess not! guess just hopeful thinking.

With the company I was with it worked this way. If the company asked you to move, they would pay all moving costs and a trip to look for a house. Then they would also have a company look over your present house and make you an offer on it. You did not have to accept their offer and could try and sell it yourself.

But, if you requested the transfer, they did not pay anything.

Well we don't make demands or get to ask for anything everytime we get new orders so I don't know if I should even list anything but I will guess anyways.

professional packers and movers (including all insurance)
professional cleaning of the house if needed
any and all costs of moving (gas for cars, u-hauls, towing, hotel stays, food costs during travel)

If they really want your Dh to relocate with them I would ask for an initial trip to wherever you were thinking of going to look around for somewhere to live and at the school system and make any initial contacts with companies if you would work also.

At least in the army we get time to get to the new place and find somewhere to live, look at school systems, and get our bearings before we have to move there.

Good luck in your decision,
Tina

DH's friend got a job that he had to relocate for. They gave him a flat amount (10K I think?) for relocation expenses. I think that a lot of companies reimburse relocation this way.

We were truly blessed (even though we were facing a layoff..) with the new company. They paid realtor fees for the selling of our house (up to a certain amount), 3 months living expenses until we found a home, all of the moving costs with a professional moving company, a couple of trips to the new area, and closing costs on our new home. They were certainly generous and it varies with the company. We simply could not turn it down. The job is going great and we are settling in nicely.
Good luck with your move!! :D

We've done corporate moves 3 times.

For the first 2 they paid for the movers (packing, insurance, transport etc) and our expenses to get to the new place. In one case we had our cars transported so they paid for our plane tickets. Most also work out some sort of temporary housing. Ours has generally been 30 days.

The latest move we got a flat amount. Over 10K I think, I don't remember for sure. We could use that anyway we wanted to move. We were given any amount we didn't use as a bonus. We did use almost all of it.

My DH moves people a lot. He typically gives about a flat 5k for jobs that pay around 30-45k per year. Most of these people are single and moving apartments not families.

Selling our houses has always been our responsibility but I do know some companies will buy them if they are moving someone. We've also never made "demands" or really asked for anything extra.

Also remember that you will be taxed on the cash value of anything the company pays like it's income. I don't think if you are reimbursed you have to pay taxes.

We only relocated once, the company made it extremely easy at that time. They supplied us with a corprate moving company who came, packed, moved everything inclucing the cars, would remove hanging lamps is we wanted. The company had 3 appraisers, then offered to buy our house so we wouldn't have to go through the hassle of selling. If we did sell it ourselves (or through our own realtor), we got 3% back. Not only did they pay all closing costs on our purchase, they would pay up to 3 points on our mortgage. Oh, yes-the corporate movers were willing to unpack at our new location, but we chose to unpack ourselves. Rumor reaches me that the company no longer gives such a liberal relocation deal (don't expect to find out first-hand).

When we relocated we were keeping our house so no realitors fees involved on this side....

They provided packers and movers...I had to get 3 appraisals they picked the middle man. They also moved our cars and paid for that. Plus we got 2 or 3 trips out here. Then he got a 10K bonus up front.

Good luck!

We have made two major corporate relocations in the last 4 years. The following is what our Relocation Package included:

- 2 house hunting trips
- all realtor fees and commissions on both ends
- closing costs on both ends
- paid the mortgage on the house we were selling until sold.
- cleaning of houses on both ends
- 80% Equity Advance to put towards downpayment on new house
- All moving expenses- packing, unpacking, transporting cars and airline tickets if needed
- temporary housing expenses if needed - including boarding our dog
- a lump some for incidentals - (we call it Curtain Money, used for blinds, hooking up utilities etc.)

We have been very fortunate with our moves, we have never had to put our house on the Market until after we moved out of it and have always had a new one waiting for us.
I also know, at least in my DH's company there are different levels of Relocation Packages based on position in the company .

Thank you all so much for your answers. This gives me something to start with.

it really depends on the company. Ours pays for everything! They arrange for the selling of the house pay all closing costs on both houses, pays for the moving company to come in and pack and move and unpack at the new location, pays for the trip for the whole family to the new location, daily per diem for 2 months after the move and buys down points for the new mortgage.

There is lots more as well. We do nothing :)

Wow! Where do you people work? I want to work there! :teeth:

The hospital I worked at paid strictly relocation expenses up to $5,000 for any docs.

Too funny...I was just working at a temp job and saw a few e-mails about relocating someone. The e-mails said that the average household is something like 9,000 pounds to move. This particular family had more than double that! Plus they had some ancient Army vehicle that's 8 feet wide and 12 feet high! :faint: The upper end of management at this place said...this is why we have limits on moving expenses! ;) Someone else wanted to know if this was the vehicle he planned on driving to the hospital. LOLOLOLOL! They had no problem transporting the BMW.
