Relocating to WDW?

At the end of May, it will be two years since DD and I moved to Florida. Now that we are here, I can't imagine ever moving. We love it here.

For me, some of the magic would be lost if I went too often. I know I am in the minority here.

SimonV and I have a home just a few minutes outside Disney. Far from ruining the magic or its 'getting old', we are MUCH happier having a home in the area.

We do travel a lot, but it's great to be so close to our work. It's my refuge, my little bit of heaven. :)

The older I get the less I enjoy New England winters, but I also get sick of oppressively hazy, hot, and humid weather. What are summers like in Central Florida?

Also, which communities surrounding Orlando have the best schools?

Thanks.

We moved here too 5 years ago...
Pay for passes with a part time Disney job - Go FREE!

The only problem with living in this area is just how fast the houses are being built. The schools are extremely over crowded and this can be a worrisome aspect for parents with young children. They can't seem to build the schools fast enough to keep up.

Living here is great - I gave up cold Illinois winters gladly.

As for leaving other family members - No worries. They love visiting and saving on what would have been a hotel bill for them.

As for "losing the magic" - no way! It retains all the magic and gains much more when you learn the ins and outs of the company and the property. There is much to learn and see and do. It is fabulous to visit the park and not feel rushed to do everything in one day.

As for employment -Orlando is full of many wonderful entrepeneurs. Figure out what your own personal skills are and go for it.

Would love to live near Disney but have always lived on the water. Am looking now into lake areas around Disney. DD graduates high school next June so hopefully will be in Florida then. I am also sick of the north east winters. When I was a kid I loved it, and used to ski all the time. But after 2 kids and a bad back, I gave up skiing and now prefer to be in the sun! :sunny:

VacationDad.....it's hot here from May through October but the way I look at it, when I lived up north we were indoors all winter. During the summer you go from your air conditioned house to car to shopping etc. You can be out in the heat as much or as little as you like. The worst of it is June-September. You can't beat the winters though. We have our cold days, but if we start out in the 30's or 40's we'll warm up to 50's and 60's. And those cold days are mostly in January....by the end of February we're hitting the 70's again. I love it...never want to go back to winters with snow and ice.

From what I've read, the best schools are located in Seminole County which is right next to Orange County.

heat and humidity are no different than the midwest, it just lasts longer. and the sun is more intense. we get a little relief living near the gulf from the seabreeze. today was another perfect day.

I've been trying to convince Disney to pay me 60 grand a year for putting on a Mickey Suit. But sadly, they haven't seen the light and recognized the brilliance of my master plan.

And here I thought we were the only ones. :rotfl2:

We moved down from NY about a year and a half ago. We moved north of Orlando, about 45 minutes away from WDW, and we love it.

I had been trying to talk my hubby into it for over 5 years. Most of my family is still on Long Island, but they come to visit, and we can always go up there if we feel the need to be cold again. lol We didnt move here because of WDW, but it certainly is a perk, and saves us a lot of money on vacations, considering we almost always came down to WDW on vacation.

We were lucky my DH transferred down with his job, and I found a job pretty quick after my NY unemployment ran out. We bought our home right before the crazy price increases. Our taxes are still less then NY, and we would never have been able to afford the house we have here if we were in NY.

I am happy with the School district we are in, which was a major factor in picking a community. My DS loves it, and if I even mention moving back to NY, both by DH and DS look at me like I am crazy.

Call me crazy, but I still get teary when we pull up those Arches across the highway that say "Welcom to WDW" :wave2:

DD did a college internship in 2002...went back to SUNY Fredonia, went back as a seasonal in the summer of 2003, summer of 2004, January of 2005, graduated SUNY Fredonia in May 2005 with a degree in Elem. Ed...June of 2005 relocated to Orlando...working F/T with Disney right now! We are now DVC owners...going on vacation and visiting with DD at the same time...at least 3 times a year!!!!

we need to carpool so you and my wife can share the kleenex. :)

This time i really mean it--I may not be leaving!

Anyone know new housing around WDW--or is everywhere?

School districts to recommend?

Thanks

Gerry

I would move straight away but there are some issues...

I am from Belgium and getting into the US (green card, etc) isn't that easy for two people...
My son is 6, and although he speaks Dutch and English, it would be a major change (even if he says I want to go and live IN Disney world...

I'm not giving up on this dream, but I don't think it would be easy... for now I'll visit it as much as I can, who knows what the future brings (although I am not getting any younger)

I divorced in Feb.
Sold house in May.
Been trying for a transfer since June.
Nothing yet.
I have no family in Oregon.
So I might as well go for my favorite place.
Besides I'll take sun & heat over rain & cold
for Winter any time.
Currently living in Oregon
Hopefully soon in Florida.

I can't say i haven't thought about it.. but thats it.
I just can't see taking my dd away from her family, we all live within 20 min of each other right now (both grandparents, aunts, etc.) And we are very close. To me, even the mouse can't replace my family time.
Also my dh doesn't want the FL heat... And i know we would miss living right near the beach.. That is another major factor.
But, i would love to win the lottery so i can just go visit 6x's a yr! LOL Or possibly when i get older i can convince dh to do 6mo/6mo.

:sunny: :sunny: The weather up here now is just as hot if not hotter then down there now. It's not like this all the time I know, but we are getting hotter and more humid each year.

I for one can't take the cold winters we have, just not for me.

Been here 3 years now -- DD9 (she was 6 at the time) and I moved here from PA away from all our family, and I have no regrets. Family visits often!!!!

DD is in a school that has been A rated for several years, and although there are portables (not many schools around that don't) it does not negatively affect her school experience.

We are in an area within 35-45 min driving distance of WDW - easy access by the toll roads, and just about EVERYTHING else I need is within 3 miles of my home! I am so glad that I made the move when I did - the house I bought for $177K in 2003 just re-appraised for $330K this week.

Summer is longer - but not really any hotter or humid than PA in the summer... and there is no SNOW!

Our best friends did the same thing, they moved 2 years ago. They bought there house for $150k now appraised at $250k. They live about the same distance as you do. We visit them all the time, we will be going down 9/1 to see them. I have been down two times already this year. Hope to move some day soon.

We are going to sell our florida house unfortunately. We live out by JH Wyoming during the summer and come back in the fall but having to pay so much for taxes, utilites, etc is getting to be too hard for us.

Also living on 43 acres with no neighbors make coming back to Florida just a little to hard. I leave my keys in the ignition at all times. Irene at the post office knows me and my entire family by name, and the water is clean. My DS is safe here and we have so many great value which he learns out west. How to care for his horse, how to fence, how to help others. It is nice.

I miss the warm salty air and the shopping! Did I say I really miss having a store?! The closest Target is over 1.75 one way! I miss shopping, warm weather, and shopping.

But it is good out here and I can visit WDW. So it takes over 9 hours to get there and a few thousand.

We are opposite, we are not going to move back to florida and our house is on the market.
