We're studying the meaning of speech and silence in the Quaker religion in my honors seminar, and the whole thing has been very fascinating to me. We went to a Quaker meeting on Sunday and it was really interesting, totally not how I'd pictured it would be. Not so much for my class, but for my own curiosity on the subject, are there any Quakers who post here on the DIS? What drew you to the religion? What is your meeting like? Do you follow the strict language codes?

My father is quaker, but my mom was methodist. I went to church with my mom and an occasional meeting with my dad.

The meetings are very serene, IMO. The quakers believe in an inner light that each of us has. I think that is a beautiful image. Quakers are big believers of equality and peace.

The meetings I have been to have been opened and closed by a "leader" (I'm not sure what they are called), but there are no clergy. There is silence until someone wishes to speak. I've also heard people sing during Christmas.

I've been to quaker funerals too and it's just the same. The leader opens and closes and people just speak when they are moved to.

As a child, I found this terribly boring, but now it is very interesting to hear many different people on a Sunday as opposed to the same one.

I'm not sure what you mean by language codes.
