Registries - am I the only one who doesn't like them?

My feeling is that the best gift you can get for someone is what they want. If people choose to have a registry list to select from that's what they want. If they have no list then they want the giver to be creative and want that.

I happen to like registries for big events such as a wedding or baby shower. It makes it easier for me and cuts way down on either multiple items or none at all that are really needed.

Since brides don't often have a "hope chest" anymore where they could collect items like silverware or towels in advance the registry has replaced that.

I like them - but I don't feel tied to them for my closest. Lots of people wanted to get us our china, so if we didn't register, we would have had to keep telling people which pattern it was. However, my best friend gave us an engraved spoon from England, which obviously wasn't on our registry. We cherish it because she had it made specially for us - and we cherish every piece of china and the other gifts from the registry. (And yes, I can remember who bought us each one!)

Also, a lot of our friends are just starting out as they get married, so I want to buy them something they NEED. Registries help me pick that something.

I *love* baby and wedding registries. I love shopping off of them for friends, family and acquaintances and I love registering for things when it's my own special event.

I think they're silly for birthdays.
