Regional Sandwiches

Oh, well, yeah, I've had that! :thumbsup2 I was picturing ground up olives or something! LOL! :rotfl:

Believe it or not, anywhere else, if you ask for olives on your hamburger, they look at you like you have two heads.

Here on Long Island we have Heros (subs, grinders or hogies elsewhere). A really popular hero is the Italian Hero ~ ham cappicola (spicy ham) salami, ham, pepperoni, provolone cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion , oil & vineagar on Italian roll.:cloud9:

Meatball/eggplant/chicken cutlet parmigian hero~ either meatball, breaded eggplant cutlet or chicken cutlet on a roll with marinaria , melted mozzerlla & parmegian cheese.

Of course we have the best bagels in the world here ;)so lots of people do these for breakfast or lunch. tons of varieties of bagels ( plain, poppy, sesame, egg, chocolate chip, sundried tomato, salt, everything, egg everything etc...) and as many varieties of cream cheese to put on your bagel ( plain, scallion, veggie, chocolate chip, olive, sundried tomato, everything, strawberry, lox etc..)

Mmmmmm... beef on weck! That's exactly what I thought of when I saw the thread title. Maybe I'll have to go get one :)

Oh yeah, our subs don't even resemble a Subway sub (and cappicola is pronounced gabagool if you want to order it). Lots of different ham options here!

Here in North Carolina we love some fried boloney...and chicken salad sandwiches!

My Dad used to make fried baloney sandwiches when I was growing up in NY, and he was from NC!!

Never seen them in Atlanta, either! :confused3

My personal fave is any good deli kosher sandwich like I used to get from the little corner delis in Brooklyn. I remember getting a knish filled with pastrami and grainy mustard!!! God I miss NY!!!!

In Iowa - the big thing is Maid-Rites, or loose-meat sandwiches. personally, I don't like them but they are one of DH's favorites. Giant breaded pork tenderloin sandwiches are big too - now those I like!

I use to go to Greenville OH once a month and would always stop at the Maid-Rite there. They were OK, but I always felt that since I was there I should stop and eat. My dad remembered them from when he as a boy and always raved about them.

I haven't really missed them since I stopped going to Greenville!

If you come to Pittsburgh, you have to get a Primanti Sandwich. mmmmmm, tasty!

http://www.primantibros.com

I don't know if it is a regional thing, but I had never heard of a ham BBQ sandwich until I moved to Pittsburgh - http://www.post-gazette.com/food/19990708count.asp They are very popular here for parties.

And I have lived here over 20 years and still have never tried one of those Primanti sandwiches mentioned by Miss PArk Avenue - the idea just doesn't appeal to me.

Love Primanti's. Love ham bbq. Both VERY Pittsburgh.

I guess lobster rolls is the obvious answer for us, though I don't eat them. (Must be on a hot dog roll, that's just the way it is.)

The other Maine answer is an Italian sandwich. It is not a hoagie or a sub, it's an Italian. They have ham, American cheese, onions, green peppers, tomatoes, pickles, black olives, salt, pepper, and oil on a long roll. No lettuce!

I guess we could add (bright) red hot dogs too, if those might be considered a sandwich. Definately a Maine thing.

:scared1:

You don't like Maid-Rites?! That's blasphemy! They're soo good.

The pork tenderloions are delicious, too - especially from Joensy's in Solon or Center Point. :lovestruc For those who have never had the pleasure, Iowa does tenderloin sandwiches BIG:

:scared1: They might wanna get a bigger bun.

I don't know if it's necessarily a local thing, but I could really go for a pastrami sandwich from Katz's in NYC! Yummy to all the Jewish delis!

I am a true Hoosier, so I have to mention the breaded tenderloin!

Nuts, beat me to it! I love a good deep fried breaded hammered pig's butt! Penguin Point restaurants make my favorite!

The "Maid-Rite" that powellrj speaks of is different than your "Maid-Rite" though they both are regionally famous for "loose meat" sandwiches. The Greenville "Maid-Rite" sandwich uses meat that is steamed in beer (it's also a bar). It's also not a chain, but a single small mom-n-pop operation.

Apparently, St. Louis is home of the St. Paul sandwich, which is an egg foo young patty (bean sprouts and minced white onions) served with dill pickle slices, white onion, mayonnaise, lettuce, and tomato between two slices of white bread. I've never had one, but several people in my family have and love them.

Yeah, I've heard of those. They sound good but.. I bet ours in Iowa are better. I had to give My2Cinderellas a hard time though, since she's from Iowa and said she doesn't like them - I think that's the first time I've heard an Iowan say that!
