i have been saving cans for money for awhile now and the other day hubby saw me stepping on one to crush it and asked why i was doing that, and i told him because it made it weigh more. now question of the day does a can weigh more if crushed or does it weigh the same ? i would think it did weigh more. but he said there was no way it would. :rotfl:
so we have been debating over this for a week lol.

It weighs the same whether you crush it or leave it alone. You don't add any mass to it by reducing it's volume.

Sorry to let you know you'll have to admit to your hubby he was right! lol
It weighs the same....but they are easier to store :)

The individual cans weigh the same (think about it, its the same amount of aluminum, why would it weigh more). However, because there is less air (which has a neutral weight), you fit more cans in the container and the container weighs more when it is filled.

You're kidding, right?

Here's a test: Weigh yourself standing up. Then squat down and weigh yourself. Does your weight increase because you're "crinkled up"? Of course not. Neither does a can "gain weight" because its shape is changed.

Does the place that you go to take them crushed? I return them at the store that I bought them at and they won't take them crushed. They have to be clean and in regular condition. It is a nice way to make a little pocket change. p.s. Don't you hate when they are right???? :rotfl:

thank you for the responses, i guess i was having a "jessica simpson" moment lol. i had to share the thought though. :rotfl:

:rotfl2: I had to laugh at this visual!

I lived next door to an older lady that walked every morning and collected cans. She would take them to her house and add some dirt inside them and then squash them.

TeeHee.....I guess her's weighs more squashed than unsquashed! :rotfl: :rotfl2:

Where do you guys live that cans are worth more the more they weigh? I am from Michigan and cans are refundable for 10 cents crushed or uncrushed. Actually most places here have machines that do refunds by scanning the barcode on the can and if the can is smashed then it can't read it=no refund!

We take ours to a recycling facility. They weight the amount of aluminum or other metals that you have and pay you per weight.

I, on the other hand, have never seen the type of facility you mentioned. Wish we had those they sound cool.

Here in Kansas we do not have the 10 cent deposit. We just have to save them for recycling.

Ours are just in our grocery stores, just for cans and bottles for beverages
