refusal to evacuate clearwater/tampa *UPDATE page 1*

I was wondering why they do not mention central Fla but only the gulf coast on the weather. I mean Tampa is only 1 hr from Orlando. Do you think the effects will be felt in Central Fla?? I know when Floyd hit Fla Disney had to close for at least one day maybe more. I am thinking of all the tourists who would be in effect stranded w/o cars etc, pretty much stuck in a hotel. It never really occured to me before but do you think that they have a disaster plan at these hotels??

Orlando will get wind and rain but have no worry about storm surge. Yes the do have a disaster plan in the hotels especially the Disney resorts. The effects will be less in Orlando since the storm will most probably loss strength as it fgoes over land. Good luck to all of you. We're only getting high winds and a bit of rain from the fringes here is So Fla (Miami-Dade)

Orlando is where many of these people are evacuating to. It's probably the best place to be if you are staying in Florida. WDW has cut back hours today (AK, DD, BB are closed -- other parks closing at 1:00 p.m.), evacuated folks in the campground and is monitoring the situation. Even the non-Disney hotels are taking precautions of brining in extra food and water.

People who have refused the evacuation order have been told they will be on their own. It is extremely selfish to expect an emergency services worker to risk their lives to come get you after you refused to heed the early warning. They have stated that they will not conduct suicide missions to rescue people like this.

The Tampa area has not had a direct hit in many years. In that time, an awful lot of development has taken place. The storm surge seems to be the real concern with how these buildings will hold up.

Where do they send the people that were evacuated from the campground??

Allearsnet says they were put up at Port Orleans.

Yes! That part is very scary. Just read on TBO.com that they are shutting down power to downtown Tampa and to Davis Island. One of the main hospitals is on Davis Island. They'll have generators of course, but they could still be completely cut off.

I live in Montgomery and did when Opal hit as a category 2. I can't imagine staying on the coast during a 2 or higher. We lost so many trees alone around here, it was ridiculous. And we're 3 hours inland.
I've also heard stories from survivors of Camille that did stay on the coast. So many were killed from making that kind of stupid decision. And, with kids, I would definitely head inland.
Sheesh!

I am very worried about my parents who live in Hernando County, which I believe is about an hour and a half north of Tampa. Although they have not been ordered to evacuate, I know their house is not built for the 90-95 mph winds that are predicted over Spring Hill. They are both in their eighties and have not left. They do not have a computer and did not even know that some in their county were evacuated. I gave them the number of the local emergency management office and told them to call regularly. I pray for all those in the path of Charley.

Laz, is there a friend or neighbor that lives close that your parents could stay with...My parents will be coming to either my house or one of my sisters homes this afternoon before the storm arrives...just being in a more structurally secured building should be OK.

Beckie

Their is no one except nieghbors in thier community. I told them to evacuate with thier nieghbors as a group. However, with Charley heading south of Tampa, they may be able to ride this out.

I don't care what kind of storm or what category, I don't take chances and that's that. We get all kinds of storms here, rain, snow , ice, wind, tornados , etc. I just do not take chances and if I was closer to the shore , I would evacuate in a hurricane like you wouldn't believe. Not worth taking chances in my opinion.

Your friends in Tampa seemed to have lucked out. Ft. Myers will not be so lucky. I just hope those of us in Orlando fair well. They are starting to post tornado warnings just to the south of Orlando. We should start getting the preceeding storms in about an hour. They are telling us that it should be bad from about 5pm to 2am. It's going to be a long night! Wish us luck guys!

Charlie's been promoted to Category 4. I would be getting out of the way of this storm if at all possible.
