What do you guys think, yay or nay?

My niece would like an Ipod for Christmas, and I was thinking about buying her a refurbished one from Apple. They put it in a new box, along with new headphones and a new battery.

I would love to save the $30 and get her a refurbed Ipod. Even then, that will put a severe dent in her Christmas gift budget. Have any Disboarders purchased a refurbished Ipod? Good idea or Bad idea?

A big Yay! :thumbsup2

We have done it several times with no problems and lots of money saved!

My dd's refurbed nano is still working great and I just got my 2 dses refurbs to put away for Christmas. You can't go wrong buying one directly from Apple since it has the rehular 1 year warranty :thumbsup2

I bought my DD one and it looked brand new!

I would suggest that you wait for Apple to announce the new generation of the iPod for Christmas and then pick up the current generation for even less.

My DD has had hers for 2 years and it still works great!

They just released the new generations at the beginning of September.

I literally just bought a refurbished iPod nano for $99 (for an 8gb nano with video camera, video playback, and FM tuner) versus $49 for a new 2gb shuffle.

It literally seems brand new from every perspective. It came with all the documentation and packaging of a new iPod (even the Apple stickers!), and is perfect. I believe it also has a 1-year warranty as well, but I have to check.

I assume the quality is the same for an iPod touch, but I'll admit I'd have to think about it for a touch screen (so many nuances of a touch screen...not sure if the price reduction would be worth it in that case).

I think you are fine. The ipod is a fairly simple item and to bring it back you generally need a new battery or a new drive. Not too much can go wrong. Every once in a while amazon warehouse has the refurb'ed ipods. If you have a family member in college or a teacher they can get an educational discount from apple.

I bought my iPhone as a refurb and it worked and looked perfect. This is how I will make all of my future iPod/iPhone purchases.

My son needed to have his IPOD repaired - and the replacement was refurbished. We have had no problems at all.

I once read an article that said buying refurbs are better than buying the original because the one you get is specifically checked after refurbing as opposed to just getting one that was part of a line where random ones were checked for quality control. Made sense to me :)

I've bought refurbished direct from Apple a couple of times. They work great -no problems.

The only negatives I have with them 1) you can't have them engraved (not that big a deal but a big plus when they're young - less apt to get stolen); 2) there is a very very limited return window - no matter why you are buying them (even if buying as a christmas present) you only have 30 days from the date of purchase to return. I went to return one at 35 days (4th gen nano days after the 5th gen nano came out) and it almost was a no-go. The only reasons they let me return it was I simultaneously while on the return authorization call, bought a new 5th gen ipod nano and the 4th gen had never even had the seal on the box broken.

I have purchased a couple from Apple. I would recommend it.
Never had a problem and they are going on 3 years old.

I have an OLD iPod...I think it is called the iPod Classic and it has a 60GB capacity. I bought it as a refurb back in 2006 and it gave me ONE problem in the past 4 years. One day, it wouldn't shut off. No matter what I did, I couldn't get it to turn off. So, I just let the battery die, recharged it and it has been fine ever since.

I still use it to watch movies on (I need an occassional POTC 1-3 fix every now and then) and I have all of my workout music stored in it too.

I would love to get an iTouch someday and the first place I look will be the refurbs from the Apple Store.

Just adding to all of the positive information you are getting. DS's iPOD is a refurb we bought two years ago. It looked brand new and has worked perfectly every since.

I have bought refurbished from Apple three times now with great experiences as well.

I do want to note that the package will say "refurbished" on it, if that is a concern for you since it's a gift.

Love my refurbished iPod. I bought it in January of '07 and it's still going strong. I have a 32gb classic. It gets used every day. When it dies (:scared1:) I will definitely go the refurbished route again to replace it.
