Refurbished iPad? Opinions?

It's the only way I can afford one, but I had a bad experience buying a refurbished Nook Color last year. It just never acted right, freezing up,etc. If I was smart, I'd have returned it but I was in denial that it wasn't up to par, until it was too late. Now I'm skittish about refurbs.

Will it look at all like a used product?? I don't really want to spend the $$ on a product that may have scratches and/or wear and tear. (the Nook looked like it was in mint condition). Thanks for you help.

* by the way, I'm talking about the refurbished iPad on the apple site*

Refurbished products from the Apple website have brand new outer shells put on them. They will look new. The new product 1-yr warranty will apply as well.

But now the one I was looking at (iPad 3rd gen) is sold out. It was $379 for a 16 gb. I see that a NEW 16gb iPad 2, with Wifi is only $399. What's that all about? I just need the short answer...thanks! I guess if I'm getting one, I should act fast??:confused3

I've bought refurb products from Apple and would do it again. They look new and they are covered by the same Apple warranty. My iPod I bought from them as a refurb froze up after a couple of weeks. They had me ship it back at their cost and either fixed it or sent me a new one. Either way I haven't had an issue with it since.

Keep checking the website. Their inventory changes throughout the day. I am looking for a 2nd Generation 32 GB for DH. They had it a month or so ago for $379. ( I had bought the 16BG for $319 but sent it back to get the 32GB). Now I am stalking the Apple site til it comes back.

Yes, you have to act fast when the one you want is on the site. They come and go so if you miss out just wait a few weeks and it should show back up.

Ok thanks.... I can be a stalker too! Lol

My ipad and ipod are both refurbs from apple....no issues in over a year! :thumbsup2

But can someone explain to me what a brand new iPad 2 is only $20 more than the returned 3rd Gen was selling for ????

We bought two refurbed Nook Colors last year and they have both worked perfectly. You should have sent yours back :(. I would buy a refurb from Apple. Looking into getting refurbed Ipods for my girls. I think it is a safe value :).

I have purchased refurbished iPods over the years without issue. A couple of shuffles and a couple of nanos. All are still working like new today. By way of contrast, every NEW Nook color I play with in B&N stores seems glitchy.

The iPad 2 16gb is $20 more because it is new. The iPad 3rd gen 16gb refurbished is less because it is used (even though it has better specs). The 3rd gen has better screen resolution, a faster processor, etc.

So, you can either get the best iPad available used, or get the older model brand new for almost the same price.

I have the iPad 2 and love it. The 3rd gen is definitely not a big enough upgrade for me to trade mine in for it but if I were shopping today to buy one, I would probably go with the refurbished 3rd gen, although as I said they really aren't that different so you will love either of them. :) Just keep checking the website if you are set on the refurbished one.

I just checked the Apple site and they have the I-pad 2 16GB back up for $319. (They were not there earlier today). I think this is a great deal for this. Now if they can bring back the 32GB.... (waiting patiently...)

GOT IT! Thank you so much. Perfect for my responsible 10 year old who has saved $150 of her own money towards it. We're shelling out the rest and giving it to her for Christmas. Truth is (unbeknownst to her) we will just take her saved money and put it in her savings anyway. ;-)

I signed up to get emails whenever apple posts a refurbished ipad. I found a link on fatwallet.com (forgot to save the link, sorry).

Right now I am waiting to see if DH gives me the okay to purchase when I see a deal or wait until we get our new Disney credit card for the rewards points.

My mom's iPod is a refurb, and it has been great. If it is a refurb directly from Apple, I would fully trust it. I think they even come with the same warranty as a new item.

If it is seller refurbished on eBay or something, I would avoid it.

Quick question, being that I just bought the 16gb, I am now wondering if and how we'll be able to view movies on it. It's only wifi, so I guess we can't stream Netflix while flying or driving.... What other options are there in our case? Looking ahead to our Disney trip.

There are "Internet on the go" options that act as portable wifi connections for devices. I know Verizon has a MiFi device with options starting at $50(???), but that might be laptop only. Just google for those kinds of things...I'm a WiFi advocate, so I can't help as much as I'd like. :)

Or, you could just rent the movies from iTunes right before the trip, and watch them on the way there. You have a 24 hour limit to watch them as soon as you first view it. :) I think it lasts up to month without you watching it.
