The Disney Gift Cards, to my understanding, can only hold up to $1,000.

One thing I have been doing for my cruise is buying gift cards from Sam's for the discount + the points/cash-back on my credit card. My cruise is a long ways off, so I just pick up a $500 GC here and there when I happen to be at Sam's for other things.

However, to save my TA the hassle of giving her 20 different gift card numbers to enter, I usually will consolidate my cards into one card and one card number. That way, I can call her and say, "please charge another $1,000 to the same gift card".

I am now wondering what would happen if I cancelled my cruise after paying, say, $5,000 toward it. If the entire $5,000 was paid to Disney using a single GC number, would they refund the entire $5,000 to that one card? Or, if the card can only hold $1,000 of the refund, would they cut me a check for the remaining $4k?

Thanks!

They would issue you $5000 worth of gift cards. Just let them know that you no longer have the original form of payment (gift cards) and then they will issue you a few new gift cards.

Thanks!

They will ask if you still have the gift cards of original payment (and you SHOULD - NEVER throw them away until at least after your trip!) and they will refund payment to the orignal form of payment

This is also what I do. Thanks for asking the question.

You’d be in for a world of hurt. They’d tell you that they issued the refund but it would never show up. They’d do that a few times before they realize that they need to mail you multiple new gift cards in order to process that refund. Expect about three months of calling before they finally figure it out

I'm using GC's to pay of a trip right now.
I don't leave for 5 weeks.
I was told to keep those GC's IN CASE a refund should be required. I am saving the GC's until I get home from WDW

Actually, I have kept them all. Given how expensive Disney vacations are, though, I really wish they’d up the max value on these cards to $3k-$5k.

Have you considering just consolidating to how many ever cards it would be to make the price of your trip? So if $5000, consolidate to five GCs?

You can only keep 5 GCs in your DGC account, that's why I haven't done it. I also keep 1 for cruises that my TA has, and a different one for my DVC dues, and a third for actually taking on the cruise for excursions, tips, etc so I have three "master" DGCs, then use the other two slots to facilitate combining them into the appropriate master.

Good question OP! I had wondered this myself.

Of course you can, but most people consolidate and then take the card off the DGC website in case it should get hacked (I think). I only have empty cards on my DGC account right now.

My DCL cruises are generally in the $15k-$17k range. So I could not consolidate on the site, given the 5-card limitation. Also, giving my TA 15-17 card numbers to hack in is what I was hoping to avoid in the first place.

Once the card is maxed out, there’s no reason to keep it loaded to your account. Just save it it a shoebox somewhere until the refund risk has passed.
