I had made my airline reservations for a planned trip for this coming May with USAir. Like most everyone else, I got a non refundable fare. Then I was diagnosed with cancer. I will be going through the middle phase of my treatment when I was supposed to be at Disney. I called USAir today to try and get a refund. I know the fare is "non refundable" but shouldn't there be some sort of exception for an extreme medical situation? I can't afford to pay full fare just in case something happens. Who anticipates being diagnosed with a possible fatal illness? I was told they will put my money towards a future ticket, but only if I use it within 1 year. I don't anticipate not being able to get to Disney before the year is up, but who knows.

Anyone else have this situation happen to them?

Thanks,
Kim

First of all Im very sorry about your diagnosis. I hope all is going well with the treatment.
Now, do you live near an airport? I would suggest going directly TO the airport and speaking to an actual person. I do work for an airline and I myself have refunded NONREFUNDABLE tickets for lesser reasons. Bring in a note from your doctor. It cant hurt to try...the worst they can say is no.

Good Luck.

Well, while i would like to say you have a chance, the truth is that USAir has REALLY cut down on the "leeway" they give the staff. (In other words, the staff get's disciplined etc, for breaking rules)

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis......
