refugee

n : an exile who flees for safety

Absolutely nothing racist or pejorative about that word.

Michelle Malkin has it right on this one.

Has everyone heard the latest from Jesse? He thinks the citizens of New Orleans deserve reparations from the government because the levees failed.

Oh geez. They knew if they lived in New Orleans that the levees failing was always a possibility. They knew the risks.

They are refugees, we just don't like to think of having "refugees" in our own country. It's not meant to be a degrotatory label. I guess in their eyes "evacuees" sounds better.

The problem is most of the people aren't refugees because they didn't flee, for whatever reason. They are evacuees, because they were evacuated.

Given the cuts to the budget that would have allowed upgrading of the levees by the federal gvt.. I think he's right.

As I posted in another message, even if the Army Corps of Engineers had got all they wanted in the budget, it wouldn't have made a difference for this storm. The upgrading would have taken a decade and a lot more money than what was requested in last year's budget.

Well, I also heard Jesse say a few times today that tent cities should start being set up....can you just imagine living in a tent city in the Texas heat?!

He also is complaining that people can't connect with their families. While I can't even imagine how terrible it would be to have know way to find your family, like Dr. Phil said on Larry King though..."You've got to give them a little time."

Exactly what job does Jesse think people can be pulled off of right now to start setting up the data-base? The rescues? The medical triage? The collection of food and clothing? I know that the data base is VERY important, but there are other more urgent priorities at the moment.

Michelle Malkin could say that the earth was round, and I couldn't bring myself to agree with her.

"Hurricane survivors" is an accurate description that covers everyone from the affected areas - so that's the term I'll go with.

Actually, the hospitals and shelters are collecting the data to provide to the Red Cross to track the people who left New Orleans.

Yes, we must endeavor to get the politically correct term to refer to these people-off to consult my PC dictionary.

Huh? You're the one who brought the whole issue up... :confused3

What do you care if someone wants to call them "victims" or "evacuees" instead of refugees?

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

A refugee is a person seeking refuge (or asylum). In common usage, the word refers to a person seeking asylum in a foreign country in order to escape persecution

"In common usage... seeking asylum in a foreign country"

It's called sarcasm. Just trying to point out how ridiculous it is for national figures, and even people around here, to object to using the proper term to refer to people.

I know it's a small thing, but calling them "evacuees" or "survivors" affords them a level of some respect - these people are beaten up physically and mentally. It's a sign of respect to be careful in what they are labeled. Luckily, there are some people with nothing better to do than to sit around and debate this.

Takes two to debate. There's absolutely nothing disrespectfull about calling someone a "refugee". It's nice to see in a time of crisis, the PC crowd is out on patrol.

I think evacuee is a more respectful name to call the hurricane victims. Technically the definition of refugee would be more fitting of the people that left before the hurricane but I refer to ALL people of those areas evacuees whether they left a week ago or just a couple of days ago.

 Well, hello then Fellow Debater! Since we disagree, we are debating. If we aren't, then we are agreeing to disagree.

And refugee, according to the definition, is not the correct term. No PC intended! :earboy2:

Claiming something or a word should or shouldn't be "PC" is just a tactic to get to say whatever anyone wants to say. It's a Limbaugh tactic.

Survivor or evacuee is the correct term.

It's nice to see in a time of crisis, the PC crowd is out on patrol.
You brought up the subject in the time of crisis. So did you just want a thread with no responses? LOL! :teeth:

Maybe the monies sent down in the last decades should have been spent fixing/increasing the levels of the levees.

Since they aren't exiles, it would be pretty hard for them to be refugees. I don't know why you are so set on calling them refugees, but it's not the correct word and it has nothing to do with being pc.

Why do you care what they're called? I know I don't as long as it's the correct term and it's not being used for a political game. Malkin and you fail on both counts.

A Limbaugh tactic? Hmmmm, that sounds like a tactic to discredit my point of view.

No, Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, and the Congressional Black Caucus brought the topic up, in reponse to how the media was referring to the "refugees".

It's beyond absurd.
