From Wiki:

According to the 1951 United Nations Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees, a refugee is a person who

“ owing to a well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group, or political opinion, is outside the country of their nationality, and is unable to or, owing to such fear, is unwilling to avail him/herself of the protection of that country. ”

Refugee was defined as a legal group in response to the large numbers of people fleeing Eastern Europe following World War II.

I just wondered where I need to go to donate money to those of you who are AKL refugees. I've checked the Red Cross and Goodwill but so far I haven't found a single volunteer who knows anything about this dramatic calamity which befell Disneyworld. Bono has yet to annouce a concert on their behalf. Where are the Psychologists Without Borders? I'm a little confused about what to do to support these people in dire need of our assistance. Will some one not come to their aid? Will be they left to wander aimlessly through the deluxe resorts of Disneyworld pining for a place to call "hotel?"

I will attempt to fly into the vicinity to give my moral support next week. It will be worth it if I was able to save even one life from oppression.

Have a magical stay!

LOL Thanks. You can pre-order coconut drinks by the pool (for those of us who have escaped to the lush tropics of the Polynesian)

Maybe some sunblock for those of us at BC. We'll need it now that we'll be spending so much time at SAB.:beach:

Jhryb: you are in charge of contacting the Greater Orlando Coconut Drinks Benevolent Society to see if we can get 100,000 coconuts routed ASAP. We'll also need pontoons to them bring right up to the lagoon at the Polynesian because I understand many of the refugees have been forced into the dreaded lagoon-view rooms.

Cocowum: I believe FEMA can handle the sunblock though its going to take til 2008 and another presidential election to get it to you. Sorry - but Heckuva Job bringing it to our attention!

Katieeldr: what you laughing at? Is this funny? People are suffering. They are refugees. Excuse me, I have to step back and gather myself. Kumbaya.

I am thinking that earplug are also a must for those being placed at CR. Can you believe that they are making them stay where trains go right through the building? Staying in a train station for your vaction..just horrible. I am sure the magic is just going to be ruined!

I appreciate the offer and while I am not yet an AKL refugee, I do have reservation for early Sept so I may soon become one. :confused3 Many of us perfer cash in brown paper bags dropped off under the park bench around midnight. (only in nice parts of town) Direct transfers to bank accounts are acceptable, but can get messy when the government catches wind.:thumbsup2 Maybe it would be best if setup a special account in the Caymans.:rolleyes1

Thanks for you support and bringing much joy to the situation. :rotfl2:

oh,my! :lmao: This has really made me laugh. I have had a horrible day and this has made it all better.:thumbsup2 thanks for the laugh and cheering me up.:cool1:

Yeah, the term "refugee" in relation to those moved from one deluxe hotel to another is only *slightly* exaggerated. I worked with actual refugees 2 summers ago: Montaignards, Somalians, Ethiopians, etc. One man in particular touched my heart - his 2 year old son had been arrested and whipped by the Vietnamese government, as a way of torturing the father. Our government accepted the father as a refugee, but his wife & child were still in Vietnam, on our wait list. Kinda a bleak comparison...

Cheers!

Cool-Beans = Tom Petty. Thanks tom. We'll be expecting that check to cover our refugee work overhead, insurance, errors and omissions.

Space Ranger is of course a shoo-in to teach the much needed seminar on "How to Get the Most from the System" and "Entitlement; Are we not still Deluxe Guests?" with a PowerPoint presentation on "Doing Business in the Bahamas." A refugee once, need never be a refugee again with a little dis-education.

Wirki, you are really on the organizational ball. WE do need earplugs. We'll also need to set up plans for the class action lawsuit caused by the refugees being exposed to hazardous levels of noise on the concourse at CR. Also due to depression, we need to get some additional railings up to prevent despondent AKL refugees from ending their ruined vacation abruptly.

GoofyTraci: CBR in August? How could you possibly UNDERSTAND what the refugees are going through?

hmp: did my time in the Peace Corps and have a mother in law who survived two concentration camps. yes, the label sticks in my craw but we need to have a little fun or the bad guys win.

I would hardly call us refugees, but I'd like to sign up to be a receipent of the above mentioned refreshing beverages at the Poly...and must say you all are very alturistic, organized individuals and I think we can all appreciate that :rotfl2:

And, it's important to note - CoolPool didn't randomly pull the 'refugee' label out of thin air, but is rather using the term some of the 'victims' chose on their own.

Yea, I was also wondering how badly these refugees felt when they were offered other deluxe accomodations.

I am on it!! But I am now doing "real" work and expect to get paid.

I have not seen anyone take charge of the poor saps that had to accept SSR. Oh well I guess they get what they deserve.

i like the lightheartedness... made me smile :)

:offtopic: just curious where you served in the PC? my niece returned a few weeks ago from kazakhstan after two years and LOVED it! we're all majorly proud of her... now if only she could find a job ;)

Very soon i'll be selling "I survived the AKL refugee fiasco of 2007" t-shirts.:rotfl2: :lmao: :laundy:

Gigi: thanks.

PC service: Moldova in the 90's. A place with lots of cheap local plonk, rampant drug abuse, and people who frequently will make jokes of the absurdity of their current botched place in history. A country never meant to be a country. You should be proud of said niece; I would have loved to have been sent to Kazakstan. (By the way, what did she think of Borat? The shots of village life were actually filmed in Romania I believe and were equivalent to my assigned village in Moldova.) The job thing, well lots of RPCVs end up in DC for a few years or grad school. Good luck on the job hunt.

raven69david (helluva name by the way): I love entrepreneurship. Its exactly what's needed in a crisis! I shall buy the first one, assuming of course, proceeds go to our bank account in the Caymans that space ranger is setting up.

wirki: re: ssr folks; in all disasters there are the people that you just can't help. Those who refuse to be saved. those who wave the choppers off. those who think its not all about them.
