I have a really dumb question about refrigerator and freezer doors.......

When you are finished either getting items out of or putting items into your refrigerator/freezer and you go to close the door AND you just swing it closed with your hand will the door close completely with no effort??

I have had the maintenance people here (at my apt) many times as the doors of the fridge and freezer do not close completely UNLESS you stand there and shut it. (Slam it).

Every time I turn around someone (DH, DS or me) has been in the fridge/freezer; gotten something out or put something in and we turn around and the door is still AJAR. :headache:

Then I realize this, I shut the door and the motor seems to run and run and run to get that temp back down to where it should be. :headache:

They have come to check if it is off balance (3x now) and they are laying all over the floor messing around with the legs; adjusting this and that....but it just continues to happen over and over again.

I have two fridges in my MA home and I don't ever recall having to make sure the doors are SHUT. They just shut when I am done and that is that.

Your thoughts, DISer's....I called maintenance again today and they are going to come back and check it out once again. What do you think is the problem??? :confused3

ODD!

I'm not sure what the problem is and apparently neither do the repairmen.:rotfl: But, you are correct you should not have to stand there and slam it closed. Was it like that right from the beginning? When it was new? Maybe the doors are off and not properly aligned. Hope they get it fixed for you!

Found this:
If the door closes but will not close by itself you may have to adjust the front legs to elevate the front. Please reply if you have any further questions.

:rotfl: Laughed at your post also...ya, they cannot seem to fix the darn thing. NO, no way is this a new fridge. It has to be a number of years old. AND has been consistently doing this since we moved in.

And yes, that is exactly what maintenance has been doing. They bring a "level" and set it on top of the fridge and then they start to mess around with the front legs.

They say.."you are all set"..they leave and it starts all in again. :headache:

I am a tad bit nervous as I am going home to MA for the month of August. DH will be here for 2 weeks then join me in Boston. I so know he is going to leave that door AJAR and either come in from work or get up in the morning and find the door has been ajar for a number of hours. :headache:

Sounds like they might be leveling the fridge, but it needs to be elevated in the front.

I have a french door fridge with the freezer on the bottom. The left side door has a seal on it. If I open the right door, I don't have the slam it shut. If I open the left, I do because of the seal.

We have a side-by-side fridge. The fridge side door doesn't close by itself. However, once you close it, it's closed. There's no slamming required.

I think the freezer door closes itself, but I'm not sure. The issue hasn't risen to a level that either my wife or I care about it.

If they ARE raising the front legs, maybe the front legs are then sinking back down. Maybe they are stripped and not holding onto the correct position. (If that makes ANY sense at all!) Maybe the legs need to get replaced.

Good luck figuring this out! :)

Hmmm...this sounds like a possiblity; that the front legs are stripped. Because we moved in in Sept...I have had maintenance here 3x now and they are on-call to return. Like I said this is not a new fridge but certainly in very good condition hence not really knowing the age of it but it could easily be 10 years old. Ohhh, so they can replace the legs? I told them I want a new fridge.

I think the poor ole fellow has been through too many earthquakes. :lmao:

It doesn't sound like it's the legs. It sounds like its the fit of the door itself. Maybe it's off on it's hinges and the hinges need adjusting.

OR it could be that rubber gasket strip that goes all the way around the door that's supposed to vaccum seal the air in. You might just need another gasket strip. (I *think* it's called that.) That could also account for the fact that the fan is working overtime. Air may be leaking out around the gasket.

OMG..you guys are all so awesome..that could ALSO be it!!! They have NOT looked at that rubber strip around the door nor have they checked the hinges on the door.

Hmmm..so when they get here, I will have them check the hinges, the strip around the door as well as the front legs (to see if they are indeed stripped)!!! :thumbsup2
