Refillable Mug

I'm sure that there are people that go back to McDonald's with old cups and get refills. That isn't right, but people do.

I work at a movie theatre and yes, people do bring back the bags for a free refill. They can say, I paid $7.00 and now I think I deserve a refill for free on return visits.

It isn't right. I'm really not sure if the mugs ever were advertised as forever, they haven't been since I went to Disney in 1996. I clearly remember they were only good for that trip back when I got my first mug in 1996 (and only for that resort).

Yes, Disney should enforce it more, but likely don't want to create hard feelings.

You can say it is such a minor deal - but where does it stop? Watching the Parade on a night the park closed early for the Halloween Party. Gee, why can't I? The park closed early.

Gee, I didn't get a refill when I bought the soft drink at McDonald's on Monday, so why can't I get the refill on Tuesday.

You can justify anything.

That doesn't make it right.

just back from pop and yes we bought new refillable mugs as we do every time we visit but a lot of people re use old refillable mugs and get away with it so i think its high time the hotels used a barcode like they do at blizzard beach

I love that idea. I have since I first visited the water park and saw how it was done.

That way, if someone wants to be "green" and not buy another plastic mug, they can just buy another barcode.

I totally agree!!! I am a rule follower also and FOR SURE don't want to teach my kids how to "beat" any system. We love to take the mugs home and use them for coffee and hot chocolate.
It would just be helpful to not penalize the people who follow the rules.
Because basically Disney is getting my $50 for my four mugs, so they don;t care about the next person who doesn't pay.

I agree with this. I want the complainers lives if one of their biggest concerns is what strangers do with their refillable cups. We have reused our mugs ever since we checked into a hotel and the CM at the front desk asked if we remembered to bring back our mugs to use. If Disney doesn't care, why should random guests care?

Personally, I would be thrilled if Disney did just that. But, I have to ask you a question....how could you possibly know if I was using an 'old' mug? Mine looks exactly like the one I bought on Thursday. There is absolutely no difference. Hence, the problem. I wish Disney would just sell that darn things with no stipulations...but, at the same time, they could stop the use of non-Disney mugs being used. That would be a good thing.

Like I said....I don't really need anymore, especially if they are all the exact same design. I am not a rule breaker, generally speaking. Okay, I do drive at close to 70 when the speed limit is 65. But, otherwise, I'm pretty rule oriented. But this one just bugs me.....I guess I could just toss the darn things before leaving the resort, but that seems like a waste, I don't need anymore on my shelf...I truly think that 20 of the things is more than enough for any family of three.

I would be thrilled if Disney gave us barcodes...that would enable me to bring back the same mug, if I choose. It would stop the non-Disney mug abuse. I wouldn't mind paying $6 for a barcode for each trip, per person..not a bit.

I have to agree with this.....if Disney saw the reusing of mugs as a problem and wanted some way to combat it, why would they have switched from a system of each resort having a distinctive mug that easily identified where you were staying to the generic-for-each-resort YOAMD mug? That of course wouldn't stop those who use the same resort each visit....but the 2007 YOAMD mugs had dates on them.....seemed like that would help for annual visitor....but the 2008 mugs apparently don't. So instead of improving the security to stop reuse, they're almost promoting it's ease.

All that said, I still don't stay onsite so I can't use or reuse these mugs.....so I don't have to worry about my ethics in this situation. But it is very interesting reading how others react to this subject....there doesn't seem to be many of us in the middle ground (of course those folks probably don't bother to read these threads, but I'm a student of human nature, lol).

Gee...or sell them on ebay, especially if they're the current ones, lol.

Anybody got 3 of these designs that they're not using....save the ebay fees and PM me, lol. My justification is I wouldn't pay $15 for them times 3 of us, as we don't drink soda, and the other offerings aren't something we'd spend that kind of money, but hey for a couple bucks for each, I might be interested so we could have a special hot chocolate a couple of the chilly nights on our way home. I have Paypal, lol.

Just to add fuel to this conversation... Did you know that some of the mugs sold in the past were SUPPOSED TO BE used forever? That is the way they were marketed. We have two of them, which we bought at the Wilderness Lodge. We would not have purchased them if we thought we could just use them for one week. However, since they look different from the current mugs (ours are much bigger), we are afraid to bring them back to reuse them, because some of you would think we are stealing...

I personally do not reuse mugs...not my point though.

If Disney is so worried about the mug issue, they would have Soda Police at the Soda stands, checking Room ID's, and stamping hands for the duration of someone's trip with the date of departure and resort.

If Disney is so worried about the mugh issue, they would just get rid of them all together.

The mugs cost very little to make and the soda is pennies on the dollar.

Just my thoughts.

Just to put some different light on the subject, not saying that this is how Disney thinks, but when I worked at a local theatre, it was their policy to sell the cup and consider the soda was free. So it was an absolute no-no to give away a cup, but the customer could have all the soda they wanted and if they wanted to go through all of the trouble of bringing back their cup, then we would refill that too. They claim the price of soda is so small that the cup cost more.

About the beer stein, we brought back the build your own cups, the ones they sell at Goofy's candy co, to get them refilled at Ice Station Cool. The refills on them were the same price as they would be with a plastic cup. So no real savings, but the kids got to have their frozen Cokes in the cool cups again.

This is basically what I've been getting at all along. It's the PRINCIPLE of the matter. It's not just about soda. It's about wanting to show your kids what is right and what is wrong, it is about respecting your fellow vacationers by doing the right thing. This is so much more than just soda.

The rules are simple, you buy the mug to use unlimited for the time of your stay. I'm sure if Disney had people go up to guests that were cheating the system to stop them they would make a HUGE fuss and cause so much commotion and berate the cast member that it would be ridiculous. I'll just follow the rules and go on about my business.

We were just at the world, and I excitedly purchased a mug for each of us upon our arrival. I liked the "green-ness" and being able to bring them home for re-use. I'm not sorry I bought them. However, DH & I decided we won't be doing it again. The mugs are substantially smaller than past versions, and seeing SO MANY people walking around with any and every other possible mug just made us feel stupid for spending $45.00. Next trip, we buy our souvenir cups the first day, re-use them, and pay at the register for whatever size they want to charge us. BUT - I absolutely love the ideas here about the bar codes. How can we make this happen??

As for the refillable mugs at the resorts, I really don't look at it as stealing in my opinion. Sorry, that's just me. I paid for the mug, it's not like I'm brining my own cup or thermos and filling it.

Once you took it home from the original vacation, it became part of your home collection of glasses, along with all of your other glassware. So, when you bring it back to Disney, you just brought in your very own cup from home and are refilling it. It might as well be a 12 ounce coffee mug in your china pattern, or, if you're old like me (and remember them), it could be a jelly jar you saved and decided to bring to WDW. It's all the same. It is NO different. What it isn't, is this year's resort mug for this day's/week's vacation.

I don't care if Disney cares or not. They made the rule. They advertise the rule. You know about the rule. I know about the rule. I follow the rule, because I think being fair is being right. Life's not fair a WHOLE LOT of the time. When it's in my power to make it fair, I do.

How I do love your soapbox! I'm glad I wasn't the only rule following citizen to get on my soapbox today. I'm like you, I have a hard time keeping my mouth shut about topics such as these.

again..it's just a mug and I'm sorry I even said anything about it, I should have left it at the Germany mug question. To me, it's no big deal. I guess I should have read the other similiar threads about this subject. I never would have brought it up if I thought it was going to cause such a stir. Sorry guys, I hate to break it to you, but NO ONE is perfect. If this is the worst thing we have to worry about in this world..I love Disney but I also have a life with big people's worries..

I never re-use my mugs. It's just too much trouble to schlep them back down there each trip. If you want to re-use yours though, go for it. If you choose to re-use your mugs, please know that we all don't think that makes you morally corupt.

For that matter, as far as I'm concerned, you may also come to my resort and swim in the pool there, as I probably won't be swimming anyway. If your 10 year old looks like he's 2, then say he's 2 if you want to.

Your choices may not be ones I would be comfortable with, but it isn't my place to judge you.

On the other hand though....cut in line in front of me and we're likely going to have a problem!
