We were in a similar situation a few years ago, with a split stay between PC and AKL, with 4 of us in the family.
We bought 2 mugs at PC, mainly because the kids loved the frozen coke machine there (and so did I!) Hubby and I would use the mugs for tea/coffee in the morning, the kids would use them for soda/frozen cokes in the afternoon and evening.
When we moved to AKL, we bought two more mugs. I would go down and get coffee and tea in the AKL mugs in the morning, transfer them to the PC mugs, and then the kids would go down and get cocoa in them for their breakfast.
I find that the mugs (especially the lids) break/leak after about a year of dishwasher abuse, so we love to get mugs each trip. We always bring home 4 each trip!
