Really tragic. They were just driving through a wooded highway when it fell on their car. I've been on similar roads where something this random could have happened to anyone.

A man and woman from Yreka were killed when a large redwood tree fell directly on top of their Honda Accord Thursday afternoon while they were driving on Highway 199, west of Hiouchi.

happens in oregon also......really weired me out....but then that airplane hit that car and killed the child....How does this happen??? I understand rogue waves on the beaches in oregon and failure of folks to take warning, or avalanches in snow country or riding outdoor recreation equipment...but a falling out of nowhere.....how does that happen?

This always worries me - tress falling down and hitting our car while driving - during or after any storm.

So so sad. Prayers go out to the families.

That is so tragic. I’ve been where this happened between Crescent City and Hiouchi. Unless you’ve seen these ancient trees in person, there are no words to describe how majestic and massive they are. I remember seeing the ones laying in the park and thinking how terrifying it would be to see one fall

My aunt and uncle lived in Yreka. So beautiful. Tragic to hear about this. So sad that both parents were taken 😥

2 days ago (windy day) DS18 went out on our deck, came right back in and said he heard cracking from a tree that sounded like it was going to break any minute. So we both go over to the doorway and just as he points to the tree, the one right behind came crashing down. We just stood there with our jaws dropped. Boy Scouts taught him some of the dangers. We talked about being cautious driving around our area full of trees and curvy roads on days like that. Even if it doesn’t come down on the car, huge limbs breaking can be road hazards.

I've heard that these types of trees in well known areas often give notice if they fall. There was the Kent Tree at Muir Woods National Monument, which was the tallest in the area. It was noticeably leaning and creaking for weeks, and they closed off the trail.

I rather worry about some of the trees where I live. There are several tall redwoods, although all were pretty much planted decades ago. Maybe they don't necessarily fall over, but I've seen it after a storm where a large branch fell off, although the largest I remember didn't hit anything although it landed on a street parking spot. A woman died in San Francisco when a large redwood branch just fell off onto her car in a parking lot.

Although the tree was probably only about 18-24”in diameter, I narrowly avoided one falling across the road. Luckily, the speed limit was low and when I realized it was falling, I was able to stop just in time. If I had been just a couple of seconds faster, it would’ve landed on my car. It was a tall tree and covered all of my double lane, a median of about 20 feet, and part of the opposite lanes. Even as it fell, I couldn’t believe what was happening.

Right, even the branches, I couldn’t imagine.

I was born and raised in Southern California, and, with ALL of the beauty in that state, the Giant Redwoods are just something spectacular. I know in Jedediah (article) the temperature around you dips at least a good 10-15+ degrees. And so quiet. It doesn’t surprise me they give notice prior to falling.

So sad. A reminder that any of us can go anytime. A friend lost her husband several years ago when a semi truck lost a couple of its extra tires and they hit his car going the opposite way on the highway. I think about that a lot when I am driving the PA turnpike with all the trucks.

A branch could weigh a few hundred pounds. The woman who died wasn’t in her car, but the branch crushed her car. Even at a city park there have been large portions of trees that have fallen.
