Hi, my family would like to drive over to Oregon (we live in Idaho) and then down the coast to the Redwood Forest this summer.

Does anyone have any advice or suggestions on where to stay and for how long we should plan our stay?

I appreciate all available info. :)

Thank you. pixiedust:

Gosh, my family used to visit the redwoods most every year (we came up from the SoCal area). I'd recommend some of the CA State Parks. As I recall, Jedediah Smith State Park, outside of Crescent City, and Prairie Creek State Park, outside of Eureka, were both great. If you have the time, I'd really recommend driving down to Santa Cruz, below San Francisco, to stay in Big Basin State Park. That was always my favorite as a kid, because you get the beautiful redwoods, plus you can take a drive down into Santa Cruz and visit the beach and Boardwalk. Here's a link to the CA State Park system website, where you can get info on all the parks: http://www.parks.ca.gov/

Thanks Magix, I'll keep those places in mind. I was thinking Eureka too, but it never crossed my mind to venture down into Santa Cruz too. Thanks. :)

As for Coast Redwood I also suggest Redwoods State Park up near Eureka. Then in the Santa Cruz area there is Big Basin, it's a great park.

If you are looking for Giant Sequoia there is Calaveras Big Trees state park up near Arnold in the Sierra Nevada Mtns. This is another awesome park!

Thanks Keri. :) I'm going to the bookstore tomorrow and I hope to research these areas more. It all just looks so lovely online!! :)

They are really beautiful areas. Up along the Mendacino coast (near Eureka) there are even trees that you can drive though. This is a neat treat, if still available as many places are stopping this. The trees are gigantic and will stun you if you have never seen them before.

Last week a child in my 2nd grade class was reading a story about the Giant Sequoia's and I told her that I knew where those trees are (the one in particular) as I use to live very close to them in the Sierra Nevada's. She thought that was cool and just had to share with everyone else.

Have fun planning your trip.

if you stop in fort bragg you could take the skunk train for a trip. it takes you into the heart of the redwoods. beautiful scenery and fun trip. if you decide to stay in the fort bragg area there's a neat place we love called the cleone lodge (it's in cleone which is just a tiny spot on the road). stunning grounds to walk around-and they have allot of lodging options. b and b type rooms, motelish type rooms-and a couple of small cottages with full blown kitchens.
