Red Tide-algae bloom??? Florida residents

anyone in Sanibel now or any local residents? any improvement?

What does the forecast look like?

We are scheduled to arrive Sunday (8/5) ... for about a week. Very concerned about the reports but my cousin is telling me "it is fine". I don't want to come to Sanibel to sit at a crowded condo pool - I can do that at home! Would rather eat airplane tickets than throw good money after bad...

We would primarily be at Bowman's Beach. according to the beach report, it is still "heavy" for the dead fish. ugh. I hate disappointing people, but don't want to be miserable.

It's really bad in Sanibel right now according to WINK. They have high levels of red tide according to the report. Also Venice area and Naples. Marco is low because the current is coming out of the south from the Keys and it is pushing the red tide northward.

Wow, tourism must be bad in those area. Thanks!:goodvibes

Yep, it is a serious issue. They're saying this is the worst it's been in 10 years, and it certainly is the worst that I've personally seen it. A month ago I went for a walk on the beach and cut it short because it was annoying to walk around the few dead fish and after 15 minutes or so I started coughing, but there were still vacations there trying to make the best of it. But today I wouldn't even be able to set foot on the beach.

Certainly a real shame. Certainly can be problematic to general health, especially if you have any respiratory issues. "Thinking" about our future retirement plans, and have always enjoyed the west coast. Is the Red Tide more frequent in the summer, confined to a particular "season"? Is there Red Tide on the East Coast as well? Thanks so much!:goodvibes

Not sure - I do know the heraldtrib has an entire FAQ section that might have some answers though. We've only lived here for 5 years and we absolutely love it here. Each year we hear about the redtide but it has always seemed to come and go pretty quickly so it seemed like an annoying blip on the radar. But this year it has dragged on for quite awhile. I did have one friend that lived on the beach and sold her home and moved inland a mile or two because she hated how much it aggravated her asthma issues. We live a mile or two inland already so I only ever noticed it if I went to the beach itself.

In my opinion, it is beach weather here 12 months out of the year so "losing" access to the beach for a week or two never bothered me, but I'm sure would be very annoying to someone visiting during that short time frame. This year it just doesn't seem to want to end.

ugh. thanks for the updates. I am leaning towards cancelling trip. I will have a disappointed cousin, but just doesn't sound like fun.

THANKS, hope for the best for the west coast red tide..hope it clears up!:goodvibes

I have read articles on the red tide and a few say that the toxic air is possibly associated with Parkinson's disease and Lou Gerighs? disease. After I read that, I said No Way. It said the CDC was looking into the relationship. It can't possibly be good for your body to breath in toxic air, don't care what anyone says.
